Thanks all.:).

The photographs weren't that important to me, just playing around with the lens on a walk this afternoon. Just surprised that it finally flared and was not expecting it to do so in these photographs.

Seriously though, this is a very flare-resistant lens as per my post (#7) in the following thread:

that's often the case: photographing straight into the sun does not result in flare, that instead appears when the sun hits laterally the front element...

Yes, interesting isn't it...why do you think that this is most likely to result in flare?

I'd have to agree... That glancing light seems to have more impact on flare than straight-on. Chalk it up to bouncing around, off of elements and things. Leica's (and most manufacturers) newer lenses employ a lot more baffling and the painting of element edges and other internal bits [black] than they used to. Coatings have gotten better too.

500€ to take this piece of crap off your hands. OK? : p

Thanks so much for your very kind offer but I would feel terrible unloading this piece of glass cut from the bottom of a Coca-Cola bottle on anyone...

I'll just have to suffer...:(

That is not flare. That is an internal reflection (actually, two), which is quite a different matter. Note the outline of the diaphragm opening. Flare is a haze of light that spreads evenly across the frame, or at least over a considerable part of it.
