Holding back for Photokina

Is anyone else putting any upgrades on hold until they see what Leica has in store for us this year?

My objective this year is to sell all my Canon kit and replace it with Leica gear. I already have an M9 and a few lenses. My Canon kit is due for a body change. I am tempted by the 1dx as an upgrade to my 1d4 but I want to see what Leica does first.

I would love a low light shooter from Leica - I shoot lots of parties and commercial work in dimly lit rooms and the M9 struggles even with a fast lens - and black and white isn't an option all the time for me.

I would love a second Leica body and to ditch the massive suitcase of kit that is slowly killing me dragging it around London.

I did consider the x pro 1 but not sure the lack of full frame sensor is a good plan for me. I need at least a clean ISO at 3200 and shutter speeds of at least 1/100 which is tricky with the M9.. No matter how fast the lens is.

Yes and no. I'm exclusively a film shooter and would like a second body to complement my M2. I've got my eye on an MP and although I would be very curious if Leica introduced a new film camera at Photokina, I doubt it very much. Of course one would be hard pushed to think of any improvements that could be made to the current M7/MP bodies (an upgraded M7 with the same dimensions as an MP perhaps?)

Well until I can get the low light shots I need - people moving around and not oof I need to rely on my 5d and 1d bodies for this. I'm holding off upgrading my bodies for now and would love to not get the 1dx but i think it's almost inevitable if Leica don't deliver in the RF dept.

I've got budget approval from "she who must be obeyed" but am choosing to hold off until the new product announcements have been made. Frustrating to know I could be holding an M9-P right now but don't want to make a premature decision. So yes, holding back.

More or less same here! After one and half year of satisfying experience with the Leica x1 I'm ready to go more seriously in the digital field, but not yet decided which way...and around the Photokina probably something new will be around...

In 2014, just 2 years from now there will be a much better camera announced at Photokina ;)

This is true, but without waiting so long within this year we'll know something more about how the fuji x1 pro works in practical, we'll know how the OM-D will perform, we'll know (maybe) something more about the new mirrorless system announced by Leica, we'll know about the "small" Hasselblad probably launched around Photokina time...

...and because my money available for toys is not unlimited I prefer for the moment to enjoy my Leica (m7 + x1) before taking a decision...just my way to do :)

Undoubtably that behaviour is out there. I just think it's prudent to wait and see what new models bring as:

(1) Remediation of poor low-light ISO and rear screen might make for a more enjoyable Leica experience, and

(2) Any announcement of new product might have a material impact on the price of M9s dealers are holding in stock.

Notwithstanding the unlikelihood of any new model being actually in stock any time before the end of the year or into 2013, at least if I have the information regarding what's coming next I can make an informed decision - not based on irrational "gear lust", but based on what's going to give me the best Leica experience for the money.

It is wiser to assess your needs before falling into marketing traps.

1 - high ISO. Need or want? It is pretty good on the M9 right now with proper technique and the latest raw converters. If you only need more for one or two shots a year those are going to be pretty expensive images.

2 - rear screen - stop and consider; for what purpose? The screen of any camera will never be able to compete with a 24” calibrated full game monitor. It is foolishness to try and evaluate your shots on any camera screen, so the quality is rather irrelevant. Bragging rights only, really.

etc,etc...

Before running after the latest and supposedly best, think, and think again.

No. I am not putting upgrades on hold. I have my M9 for sale right now (before the price falls) and will upgrade to the M10 this summer.

It will cost me less to sell my M9 now and buy the M10 than waiting. If, I don't want the M10 when I see it (fat chance), I'll be able to buy a newer M9 back for less than I sold mine.

Of course, ISO depends on your needs. (What doesn't?) The LCD of the M9, though, is pretty bad (and inexcusable IMO).

Well, given that there was no better screen in the size available when the camera was introduced that sounds like a pretty good excuse to me. And yes, I would have liked it to be better as well, as it would have been more in line with the level of the camera. But a better screen would not have added any functionality, so it would not be a rational argument for upgrading.

Can you qualify this assertion. Bad for what? I find it perfectly usable for framing and focusing confirmation. If you accept that you are looking at a mere jpeg image, the real image quality requires post processing to be fully appreciated. So why is it so bad for you?

Bad: Of poor quality; inferior or defective, not such as to be hoped for or desired, unpleasant or unwelcome, substandard, poor, inferior, second-rate, second-class, unsatisfactory, inadequate, unacceptable, not up to scratch, not up to par, deficient, imperfect, defective, faulty, shoddy, miserable, sorry, incompetent, inept, inexpert, awful, atrocious, appalling, execrable, deplorable, terrible, abysmal, godawful, crummy, rotten, pathetic, useless, woeful, bum, lousy, not up to snuff... sucks! :D

Well. You guys make me smile. Lord help anyone who dare criticise the lord of Leica.

I know that I need a camera that can give me clean images at 3200 iso and at a decent shutter speed to freeze action. That's because I shoot a lot indoors with very dim lights.

I know 'with careful' planning I can push the M9 to give me useable shots but I can't always work like this in the heat of the moment. I can't always supply creative black and white images to hide grain etc.

This is a need for me and my business. If the m9 could do this now I'd have 2 of them and not a bag full of canon bodies and lenses. It would be gone tomorrow along with the suitcase I shlep to every job.

I'm waiting because if I can't be 100% a Leica shooter my next body will be a 5d mk3 or a 1dx or both to replace

My current 5d2 and 1d4.

I really really would love to sell it all. Just can't right now.

And I don't care about how good the screen is. All shots look sharp on a small LCD and I use it very infrequently. Mainly just when I'm sitting waiting to kill time.
