voxish Posted March 21, 2012 Share #1  Posted March 21, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all,  Thanks again for the advice before: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/207811-buying-used-m9-what-keep-mind.html  To follow up, I found a demo M9P and got it tax free…which is great except that both(!) of my lenses (35 'lux and 50 'cron) happen to be of the pre-ASPH variety that can't focus to infinity on digital Ms. Thus this amazing camera is already relegated to the shelf to gather dust until I can sort out the lenses! It's so awful.  I was wondering if anyone has sent a lens back to Solms to have the shroud modified? This (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/26916-how-file-down-pre-asph-35mm.html) is not something that I feel comfortable doing myself...  I called Leica as well as my local Leica shop and both were not particularly informed or helpful about this issue, although perhaps I spoke with the wrong people. Does anyone know how long this takes and how much it costs? Or has any suggestions?  Thanks for any help.  Sarah

peterbengtson Posted March 23, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted March 23, 2012 I had Leica NJ modify my 35 Summilux to work on my M9 about 2 years ago. It took a couple weeks and has worked fine.
Michael Hiles Posted March 23, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Why would a pre-digital-days lens not work on a digital M camera, e.g.won't focus at infinity? Would a brand new lens focus beyond infinity on a film M? This seems completely counter-intuitive.
pico Posted March 23, 2012 Share #4  Posted March 23, 2012 Oh, just look at page 110 of the English instructions or page 22 of the German portion. They explain exactly what lenses might not work (but can be made to work) and which should never be used (collapsible).  The camera should not be shelved. Just send the earlier Canadian Summilux to Leica.  For my collapsible 50mm Summitar - it might retract but I found it safer to put a collar around the tube to prevent full retraction.  From page 110 of English instructions:  – Some examples of the SummiluxM35mm f/1.4 (not aspherical, manufactured from 1961–1995, Made in Canada) cannot be fitted to the Leica M9 or will not focus to infinity. Leica Customer Service can modify these lenses so that they can be used on the Leica M9.
thompsonkirk Posted March 23, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted March 23, 2012 When I owned a 35 pre-asph Lux that didn't focus all the way to infinity on digital body, my experience was that it didn't really matter. It didn't stop at 3-5 meters (as in the link you sent); rather, focus moved to about 30 feet, with DOF covering the deep background. And the lens doesn't bump into the sensor, just into part of the body. Â Kirk
menos I M6 Posted March 23, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Sarah, Â I have modified one of the two pre ASPH 35 Summilux lenses, I have. It is a very simple modification for any competent camera technician. Â Contrary to many misleading comments on the internet, the lens should be disassembled (mount removed, rear element shroud removed and ground/ milled + adding of new anti reflective coating on the machined surface). Â If you are in Berlin or London, you would want to step in one of the competent Leica resellers there and ask them for a contact of a trustful technician, who can commence the modification for you. Â It is a one hour job with the correct tools and proper procedure. I would not want to send the lens away and wait several weeks/ months, to have this work done. Â I was not aware, that a similar issue can occur with a 50mm Summicron. Could you elaborate in more detail, which exact version of the 50mm Summicron and which issues you see in not reaching infinity with the M9? Â The M9 is a wonderful camera, to use these older lenses on. You should not have it sitting on a shelf ;-)
lct Posted March 23, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted March 23, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) What's the difference with the M8 here?
menos I M6 Posted March 24, 2012 Share #8 Â Posted March 24, 2012 What's the difference with the M8 here? Â Almost none. When I took measurements of the inner shrouds of both M8.2 and M9, there have been only slight variations between the two in the critical measurements (depth from lens mount towards the sensor on one critical obstruction at the bottom of the camera). Â I always advice, to mount a 35 Summilux pre ASPH the first time, focussed in the close range and NOT at infinity, to find out, if it is safe or not. Once, you know, a specific lens works safely, you can use it, as you like.
lct Posted March 24, 2012 Share #9 Â Posted March 24, 2012 That's what i thought as well but Leica does not warn against the use of any Summilux 35 pre-asph on the M8 if memory serves. I wonder why.
