A Leica 10? then a Leica 10+P+

If this is true and some you are on the the scene, please don't mention cost. My two digitals are Canons the 4D and the 7D. I have an excellent selection of lenses from the days of "pro" shooting. Since I've retired my income has dropped somewhat and has become more or less fixed on what the US government ( 3 separate agencies ) dole out every fall. Would I like an M 9P, sure, but as I said I've retired and the euros(dollars) just aren't there. Does Solms realize that their pricing policy is contributing to a smaller group of loyalists with very deep pockets. As a working pro my cameras were just that, equipment. Now I ask myself, what do I do with all my beautiful Ms and Rs with a variety of attachments, not to mention the M and R lenses.

Realize it? I'm sure it must be their plan. But take heart, not everyone who can afford Leica's prices is willing to pay them. I consider Leica's lens prices beyond the pale, regardless of how stupendous they may be built and perform. I feel that way about a lot of things, from houses to cars to watches to clothing/shoes. But I'm glad not everyone shares my priorities. It would be a boring world, and the economy would be in even worse shape.

As a car dealer once told me (in jest) (slightly) " We have to lock the door from time to time. We want to keep the brand exclusive" :p

 

Presumably, he wasn't talking about Jaguar. Or perhaps he was; only locking the door would give any sense of exclusivity to that brand. It certainly isn't the quality of the cars.

You' re behind times. In the seventies sure. The only brands Jaguar could beat in reliability were BLMC and the Eastern Europeans. But for a run of years nowadays they have been vying with Lexus for the top spot in the reliability ratings. Tata is still benefiting from the Ford input in that respect. I for one have no complaints. The only thing that will break these things is a crazy Italian. They will flatten a Chrysler :D.

...And not everyone who would like to acquire a new M camera or lens can. We won't even talk about the prices of the S system body and lenses. :eek:

 

I am fortunate to have bought my M gear back in the dark ages (2003/04) when everything was 50% less than today's retail prices. I was even more fortunate in that I had the good sense to hang on to it.

 

At today's prices, the used market is the only source for buying M gear that retains any shred of sanity.

With the latest dependability study recently released (for the USA) Jaguar certainly did beat out Chrysler, although Chrysler came in dead last. ;)

 

But I don't think 'flattening' is quite the right term. Nor is vying with Lexus. Maybe just 'vying' is perhaps more appropriate. :)

 

Although I do agree they are working hard to try to get back on track. (Mercedes is currently doing well after recovering from their own dark period during the Jurgen Schrempp era.) And I think Jaguar's Ian Callum is one of the best designers in the world today.

This thread seems to have gone off-topic. So may I ask: Have you considered buying a good used Leica M8, just to get those M-lenses operational again? Buy from a dealer with a short guarantee, and it will launch your Leica photography in a relatively painless way. Who knows where it might go from there! :)

?? Have you suffered something from a compatriot of mine ?? Yes, of course there is a number of crazy ones... :o but I don't think it's we only to have the ability to break Jags... :p

Oh-Hum... :eek:... and a Volvo driver like me... :o (but not on that pretentious sporty models - as a family keeper I stay on a quiet V70...) Where was the road ? I suppose, YOU were driving the Jag... well, the driver's door has proved definitely a good friend to have aside...
