How much memory do you travel with?

David, I simply calculate the average shots per photographic day (excluding travel journeys etc) from recent similar trips (not to same area), multiply by planned actual photographic days and add 50% contingency. I do make a back-up daily for insurance and keep my cards intact until I am home. So far I return with a healthy safety margin, the way I prefer to operate.

Last trip = 2x16, 2x8, 3x4 plus 3 batteries for a week. But I filled most of the cards in one day shooting the Occupy Wall Street scene and one of my old 4 gig cards started giving me blank exposures so I trashed it.

I often take a 13 inch MacBook pro and a bunch of DVDs, but if it is a pleasure trip, I don't bother with the laptop.

I plan to add another battery or two and a three more 16 gig cards before the next trip to the mainland. However, my next trip is to New Mexico and it is still snowing in the high desert so there's no rush. I'll hang here in the tropics till it is done.

These days I tend to look at memory cards as film and process them when I get home. If I need to read an ebook, check email or listen to music, I use my iPhone. This helps keep the kit small and lets me take a backpack instead of check-in bags.

I could say enough to equal your film exposures, but considering the cost of the camera and trip and how cheap cards are, 2000 images should do you and I figure a careful user will use one card. Return 3 to the store. Or maybe you want to divide up the take in case of a card failure.

Be sure to format the card in camera and test it out before you go. Actually download the test to the computer and run the whole process.

I plan to add another battery or two

Tom, curious as to why you carry so many batteries. I have one but all the reading I have done makes me too paranoid to travel without buying two more....and an extra charger, to boot.

I also travel with 3+ batteries, depending. If it's someplace where I have frequent access to power, I bring less. But if I'm out in say... The jungles of Belize, I'll bring more. At the very least I travel with two, more often three. One, for backup in case one dies or gets lost. Two, so I always have a fresh one on-hand. Third, so one can always be "back home" charging.

The same here - I carry 6 M batteries, 6 DMR batteries and 3 batteries for my wife's video when I am in places where charging facilities are limited or unreliable. At home? I may pop one in my pocket depending on what I am planning.

The beauty of digital and the Leica is the small size so it really comes down to how much money you want to spend on cards and batteries. I'll take 8 16 gb cards and 5 batteries for a 2 week trip. I plan on roughly 200 photos a day at most on average so I don't need that many cards but they're so small I take extra in case I have a problem with one or two and also keep them as backup without writting over them during the trip. I take 5 batteries because that will cover about 2000 photos and chargers do fail. I rotate the batteries and recharge them every time I can. I'll also take an old Macbook and transfer my photos to it each day but still leave the photos on the original cards and stow the cards as back up every couple of days or as they begin to fill. The nice thing about the laptop is I can review photos. They're so small you can't take too many cards with you and as others have noted it's best not to put too many on one large card.

I travel with 9 cards of 4-8 GB plus a Macbook if it's anything longer than a week-end trip. For my style of photography this is more than enough even for multi-week travels.

You people are nuts! :p

I truly feel like a casual shooter instead of even hobbyist reading this thread. I usually have 2-3 16GB cards with me, out of which one is in camera. I only have one battery. And on top of those I carry either iPad or MB pro (which are usually left in the hotel room or camper).

I've never run out of memory or battery. And I do plenty of chimping too..

After moving from DSRL's to Leica, I've dropped my "shot count" quite a lot. Ever since battery or memory has never been a problem. But I guess I need to try and get more creative and start shooting more...

I've never had a Leica battery fail. I like to have a bunch strictly for shooting capacity. When I get time to play, I like to sail or hike in the back country. I try to keep things that need recharging at a minimum. Three batteries hold me for a week or two. Five should give me 2-3 weeks of shooting while unplugged.

Yes, I know the car charger plug works on a boat - and I have used it as well as invertors - but I'm always conscious of power usage and try not to motor just to recharge the electronics. And, as someone who sits in front of computers far too often, whenever I get to escape I appreciate the glow of the oil lamps, the challenge of compasses and dividers and drawing down the sun to the horizon on my old sextant.

DMRs go through batteries very quickly. D2s and V Luxs do not. With the DMR I travel with as many batteries as I can find. One spare each for the lower-consuming cameras is adequate.

I have a Pelican SD holder that fits eight cards. I carry two 32 gig, two 16 gig, and four 8 gig. I fill them up from small to big. The 32 gig cards are primarily for my Canon camcorder, but obviously I can use them in the Leica if needed.

Everything backs up on a 13" MBA and to an external HD. The goal is always to return home with images in 3 places. Once home and backed up to the main server then I format the SD cards for use again.

I have the pelican holder as well...they are nice for the money!

Do most of you travel with an extra charger?

David

If I'm gone more than two or three days then yes, I bring the backup charger along. I don't bring along the 2nd power cable though, as the Apple Macbook power plugs can fit directly to the charger (in case the cable were to be the failure point).
