Sorry, Luigi.

I just reread your post. "Summicron 50 lenshead".

I guess I now have my awnser. However, which versions of the Summicron 50 have a removeable lenshead?

Thanks, Guy

Rigid Ver. II Standard or Near Focus(DR).

Afaik Ver I and II surely, the III too (according to Jan)... the IV not ... :o (maybe the "50th anniversary version" yes, which optically is a ver IV on oldstyle mount, but am not sure)

Luigi,

I was looking for a DR-Summicron for my M9 until I read that it does not focus on the M9. Does the SOMKY/UOORF combination work with all Summicrons? I have the version IV Summicon 50.

Grazie.

Guy

It's the close focus cam on the DR that keeps it from working on the M8/9. You can have it modified, but then you loose the close focus feature and might as well get the Rigid.

I think DAG can do the Mod.

Actually, when it is modified you gain the close focus feature on the M9/8. What you lose is the close focus rangefinder coupling. So, it will gain near focus on the M9/8 (and 4m to infinity). But, the range finder coupling stops as you pass through one meter and focus nearer.

If, big if, the M10 has live view then the near focus would be very useable with live view. I think for me, this lens is a better choice for the future than the rigid. It would be nice to have that near focus and I am not a collector so, I don't really care if, in making it more functional for myself I make it worth less for a collector that won't see the lens until I am dead and gone.

Maybe when people discover that photographers are modifying this lens to gain near focus on the M10 (I know, future speculation) it will become even more sought out and rare and even more expensive to buy.:D

Also, I tried the coding settings and there isn't one for the Ver. II in the menu of the M9. But, the 11817 seems to give the most pleasing color (less blue/warmer) of all the 50mm f2.0 lens choices. It happens to be the Ver. III. I know some have commented that, just pick one... but, there are differences in what the camera outputs (or LR developes) even at 50mm.

True... but is probably less expensive to acquire a SOOKY-M/SOMKY + UOORF/16508; the practical final result is the same : you can use the removable lenshead of the DR (as I do) , still keeping the DR in its original status.

And besides, Leica says that the M9 or M8 are off limits for the DR. And they are the only M cameras that do use six-bit coding.

Does this mean the DR doesn't work with the M9? I just bought a Summicron 50 DR and it doesn't focus from about 5m to infinity when the lens is attached to the camera. Why is this?

Thread resurrection!

I want to use my DR Summicron on my M9, however my interest is mainly for use in non-macro photography.

I have just bought a UOORF.

Before committing to the much more expensive SOMKY (aka SOOKY-M) does anyone know if this will give ONLY macro capability when using with a digital M, or will it also enable longer focussing for non-macro use?

TIA

Sorry, but the SOMKY+UOORF combo does allow focusing only in the near range (the same as DR Summicron... 1 to 0,5 meters) : indeed, is an accessory I often use with my DR Summicron and Digital M : dismount the Summicron lenshead, mount it on the SOMKY+UOORF and here is a light, very portable and quick to use macro set of excellent quality,.. fast to focus and with a good vision through VF.

Of course, UOORF alone is unuseful... it was made for the Summicron lenshead, whilst the SOMKY alone can accomodate the collapsible 50s (Elmar and Summicron) : brief explanation here : http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/SOMKY

As I said, I have always used a lot that set (most pics of gear from my collection posted in the forum time to time are made with it ;)) : honestly, I must admit that with the advent of M240, accessory EVF, extension tubes like OUFRO... can be that my SOMKY+UOORF loses part of its appeal... :o

Fun to re-read this thread from 2012. I did go ahead in 2012 and have DAG grind off the near focus cam on my DR in anticipation of the M with LV. And I can report that the DR is one of my favorite 50mm lenses especially with the near focus ability that can be exploited with the M + LV.

Also, having DAG code it for 11817 has worked well as I like the color correction this code imparts which is slightly warm in hue.

And it's TRUE... it does not focus... the "DR equivalent" combination that can work on M8/M9 is the SOMKY (SOOKY-M) with UOORF(16508) ring and a Summicron 50 (DR, in case) lenshead : same near focus capabilities, same image quality : I use it a lot on my M8.

I applied Luigi's solution on M8/M9,

sometimes even with Summicron DR optical cell

so not running hazard to break something.

Now with liveview M, we have other solutions to get close,

but this is elegant solution when we only rely on RF focussing from 48cm to 98cm (1:7.5 to 1:15).
