Advertisement Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Hi Flyfisherman, Take a look here JPEGs Fine from M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted February 21, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 21, 2012 Well, they are not bad, but properly processed DNGs are a whole lot better...
tobey bilek Posted February 26, 2012 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2012 ..am I missing something ? experience. Raw is better. Try using a custom white balance using WhiBal card. I find the presets not the best. You may get closer I you use the K settings, try 5700 or 5500. The other problem is the cyanish skies. They need to go more toward red. jip Posted March 30, 2012 Share #4 Posted March 30, 2012 When I bought my M8 last week, I started shooting some picture immediately in Amsterdam, the first few I took were in JPG. I really disliked them after I saw the DNG's I processed in Aperture 3. So yes, JPG's are fine... until you've seen the DNG's! Try to shoot in DNG, process them and view them! trs Posted March 31, 2012 Share #5 Posted March 31, 2012 Historically, Auto WB was very bad from get go. It pretty much missed eveytime. They fixed it up in later FW (don't remember which one). Comming from Fuji S2 Pro JPG, I still feel it is inferior. Besides, why you want to shoot JPG anyway, takes longer to process and save than DNG and less flexible. Only place I use JPG is for BW. Even then, I set BW+DNG. I do like the in camera BW JPG better than one I process from DNG (lack of skill I believe).
jaapv Posted March 31, 2012 Share #6 Posted March 31, 2012 The problem is that because of small size, thus limited power and limited electronic integration(production numbers are too small to use integrated circuits for everything) the M8/9 processing power is too limited to do extensive post processing in camera. As it is it is amazing how close it gets to the result of hitting auto buttons all the way through photoshop.

Exactly my feeling too... probably skill and experience do account... but my experience is that to obtain a good bw from DNG I lose lot of time in trial-by-error, achieving results not better than from a much quickier processing from jpg fine. There is truth in that thought Luigi. Good enough right now -vs- Perfect taking to long. It's a reasonable tradeoff depending on what the image is used for and meant to be. Not the way I'd go, but that's me and my situations and choices. RW

Luigi, after some trials and error I am able to get superb black and white and duotones from Lightroom. It might take time initially, but once you find settings that work well for you, you can save them as a preset thus saving time in future. Failing that, try using the LR presets and fine tune them to your liking.
