Nuit Posted February 20, 2012 Share #1 Posted February 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, It is hard to make my decision to buy a wide agle lens to fill up my lenght . for now I use M 18/3.8 asph, M 28/2 asph, M 35/2 asph, M 50/0.95 Noct, M 75/1.4. I am thinking between 21 or 24, please suggest from your experience. Regards, Nuit

wda Posted February 20, 2012 Share #2 Posted February 20, 2012 Nuit, you seem to have a good and balanced set of lenses at present. I would suggest using your camera pre-view lever and assess the real shortcomings of your 18 and 28. Match that to typical subjects for which you would use the new lens. wizard Posted February 20, 2012 Share #4 Posted February 20, 2012 Sell your 28mm lens and get a 24mm. 28 and 35 are in my view too close together. Your personal preference may differ though. Andy
stunsworth Posted February 20, 2012 Share #5 Posted February 20, 2012 Some people will suggest 21mm, others 24mm, I don't think that will help you to make a decision. The only person who can say which is best for you is you. Take it for granted that either of the lenses will be optically superb.
01af Posted February 20, 2012 Share #6 Posted February 20, 2012 It is hard to make my decision to buy a wide agle lens [...] I am thinking between 21 or 24 ... If you cannot decide then you need neither. If you just want to hoard lenses then better get both.
Manolo Laguillo Posted February 20, 2012 Share #7 Posted February 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) These questions have to do with the pain of not knowing in advance if this or that lens will please us. It's understandable, this desire of owning a crystal ball... ... I agree with what was said before: sell the 28, and buy a 24. 18, 24, 35, 50 and 75: nice gaps between each lens. You will be on the safe side, beacuse you will be able to cover everything. If you can afford it, and want to keep the 28, don't sell it, and buy both, the 21 and the 24... and suffer the pain of having to schlepp 500 gr more, and having to decide which lens to use. (again the crystal ball...) It's 5 lenses (18, 24, 35, 50, 75) vs. 7 lenses (18, 21, 24, 28, 35, 50, 75). The 5 lenses formula wins, IMO. That's the one I have, BTW ... There's even the pragmatic approach: buy the one you find first, be it the 24 or the 21, work with it for at least 2 months (counting at least 2 sessions per week of making photos), and see what happens. philipus Posted February 20, 2012 Share #9 Posted February 20, 2012 Hi guys, It is hard to make my decision to buy a wide agle lens to fill up my lenght . for now I use M 18/3.8 asph, M 28/2 asph, M 35/2 asph, M 50/0.95 Noct, M 75/1.4. I am thinking between 21 or 24, please suggest from your experience. Regards, Nuit With that set of lenses I'd be pretty content. From my (SLR) experience there aren't many steps - as in footsteps - between, say a 18mm and a 21mm. That said, clearly lens picking involves considering many other aspects, too. Knowing very little about the various qualities of the different wide-angles available, I would venture the suggestion that from a linear point of view, it seems the middle of the field of view "gap" between the 18 (90°) and the 28 (65°) is 77.5°. So the 24 at 74° is the exact same distance from that mid-point as the 21 at 81°. Either would do. Cheers philip

Peter H Posted February 20, 2012 Share #11 Posted February 20, 2012 When you go out with your camera, how many lenses do you take with you? Is there a focal length that best helps you to express yourself? This type of thing may help us to understand a little better how you work, so that we can do more than just state our own preferences. Although that's what it's really all about, I suppose.
tobey bilek Posted February 20, 2012 Share #12 Posted February 20, 2012 We can get so burdened with lenses we can not move. You are well on the way if you have not arrived. 35/24 is a perfect wide set. Your problem is you did not plan. 18/24/35 would be ok if if you wanted 3 lenses. 28 is too close to 35 and 21 to close to 18. Perhaps buy a 24, then decide if the 28 is useful to you. If I were you I would work with what I have.
IWC Doppel Posted February 20, 2012 Share #13 Posted February 20, 2012 I'd go for a 24 F2.8 asph if I found the 18-28 too greater gap, I have a 21 and 28 on my M8 and the gap is substantial IMO (28-38 in the M8 world). 18-28 is not subtle That's a lovely set of lenses by the way
thighslapper Posted February 20, 2012 Share #14 Posted February 20, 2012 Keep buying ...... in fact buy all Leicas lenses.... Try them all for a while and then you will realise that anything more than a handful is a complete waste of money and too inconvenient to carry around anyway..... Then you will start selling the ones you don't use..... and I suspect you will end up with the selection you had originally which looks fine to me and is similar to what I've ended up with
DennisK Posted February 20, 2012 Share #15 Posted February 20, 2012 While I agree with the comments regarding setups with ideal FL spacing (18, 24, 35, 50, 75) I know I would never part ways with the 28nmm Summicron. For me the 28mm is the center piece and I shoot more wide than normal so my ideal spacing is: 15, 21, 28, 35, 75. It really depends on your intended use though. I would love to need a 50mm Summilux because I love the rendering but I just don't need the focal length and barely need the 75mm enough to warrant a Summarit. Nuit Posted February 21, 2012 Author Share #16 Posted February 21, 2012 Many Thanks indeed guys. I did understand all your comments. First will keep my M 28/2 asph silver (hard to find or buy it back in the future) and keep my M 35/2 asph anthracite limited edition (hard to find same as cron 28/2 silver). So I will go for M 24/1.4, then become 18/3.8, 24/1.4, 35/2, 50/0.95 & 1.4 asph and 75/1.4 would be enough for the next 5 yeras . Many thanks again guys . philipus Posted February 21, 2012 Share #18 Posted February 21, 2012 I couldn't find the link when I wrote above but this image is interesting I find. It is from this page. I'm very content and happy with 35-50-90. That said my Canon kit goes from 17-400. Perhaps I'll get a really wide one eventually. I'm intrigued by your lens collection, though. How do you pick which lenses to bring with you when you go out to photograph? Or do you really bring all? philip
