I think you may well be right John. Digital is technical and very clever but film is fun and satisfying. Unfortunately the M3 and MP have long gone in my case and I can't wish them back any more than I can the enlarger and all the rest. In the end one has the choice between what is essentially a soulless computer attached to a lens (however good) and a crafted machine which is almost a living part of an organic process. Good luck, Michael

It's the only lens you'll ever need....G

Bought a 40mm Summicron last week from eb**, in mint condition for 400 Euro, but I think that prices for this underestimated lens will go up in the near future!

Nice lens for a nice price!

Does the 35mm lens used on my M8 to produce this image approach the sort of image look that you want? On the processing point I simply converted the DNG RAW file in Lightroom 2 to grayscale and slightly altered contrast, brightness, greyscale mix and applied a very slight touch of sharpening. No prizes for guessing which 35mm lens it was, but all thoughts on this welcome!

Makes me feel sea-sick to look at it. I don't suppose you thought of rotating the image to the left a tad?

Pardon my adding a question. So what 90mm lens renders similar to the Cron 50mm? Cron pre-asph or Elmarit-M (most recent version) come to mind.

Not the Cron preasph... if you search for Summicron imagery, the last Elmarit M is the solution ; or, if you compare to the "old" Summicrons 50 (rectractable version), the Tele Elmarit "nano".

Enjoy the M8 with the 35mm color skopar f2.5 for starters.

The M8 has a character all of it's own. In someways it is superior to the Nikon D3 in it's output. There is no real need to bring an M8 file into Photoshop, rather use Aperture (OSX,) Capture One or Lightroom. It is a pleasure to use. I personally enjoy the colour output from the M8, even the slightly funky colour from time to time. Life isn't perfect and neither is the camera. I have only one coded lens and the output is stunning but the CV lenses are gentle on the eye and are lower contrast.

I never take my low light Nikon cameras with me on family days out, I tend to pair the M8 with either a 28mm or 35mm. Sometime just with a 24mm and bring along my 50mm for fun. The file size and lack of an AA filter is an efficient combination.

I do not consider the filters a hinderence in shooting B/W, I like the fact that they are on because, they protect the front element. The Leica is a small item, I tend to wear mine slung diagonally across my body, so it tends to get bumped from time to time. No matter.

The 40mm Summicron C works very well. I suggest, if you get it, that you carefully file the cam on the lens mount every so slightly so that the frame finder recognizes it as a 35mm. Then you can compose it slightly inside the frame lines. If you don't file the cam, the camera will recognize it as a 50mm and you will have to compose outside the frame lines.
