Why use a half case?

My leather case provides 1. a better grip on the camera; 2. prevents the acid in the sweat of my hands from damaging the camera (I have noticed wear on the leather where my hands touch the camera.); and 3. prevents the camera from damage with contact with objects or liquids in the course of my carrying it. I have not thought of the case as muffling the sound but that would be an added benefit now that it has been mentioned.

I read that those who truly use their cameras (as opposed to owning them merely to serve as shelf displays) want to protect the body from the injuries they'd be prone to on the street and in bags with other items.

I use my cameras and still don't have a half - or any other - case. I always thought the exterior of the camera body was made to protect what's inside.

I never use any kind of case. In fact, I have the same RRS grip pictured below.

However, there are cases that provide a good grip, some protection, and with our very large SD cards for the digital leicas, the disadvantage of removing it often to change media is of little concern.

The M4 case I often use for my MP provides protection and a bit more of grip, but most importantly, the carrying strap connects to it. I take the camera out of the case whenever there is time for it and hold it with a Sling only. I found that a Fed 5 half case (top part cut off) accomodates the body with a rapidwinder, when the latter is temporarily not to be used. A zing neoprene cover can swallow the MP, case and any of my M-lenses when I want to stow the camera away or add protection in bad weather.

Cheers,

Alexander

I have the same RRS setup you have shown in the photo. I wish there was more texture on the left side of the grip so its not so slippery. If any one from RRS is reading this maybe there is some vulcanite that can be easily added? Also, I like the suggestion of having easier access to the SD card and battery.;)

I guess no half case for this RRS setup? Luigi?:D

Agreed. Not wild about that RRS grip - in fact I removed it from the rest of the L-bracket and just use the Thumbs Up device and the L-bracket now. Thanks.

When I first took the M8 in my hands it felt much too fat and bulky after many years of nice slim film M's Absolutely no way I'll make my M9 fatter and bulkier. I like slim and flexible and even remove the "rubber" from the original strap and wash it so it is nice and flexible when I wind it around my wrist.

I do remember the nice leather Benser pouches, something like the present neoprene ones, but the neoprene ones are like a sponge and only absorb water - and both moisture and leather are good for growing fungus.

I have a Zhou half case that I use on my MP film bodies when I'm shooting classical musicians. The idea is to muffle the shutter noise a bit. It works, but not as much as I'd like.

True. This is the main reason I use a Classic Case halfcase with my M9 most of the time. It muffles the shutter motor somewhat; more dampening would be nice, but it’s now so quiet that it’s easily masked by the normal sounds inside a quiet restaurant or lounge or the like. Not quiet enough for on-stage shooting of acoustic musicians, but still an improvement.

The other reason I use said case came as a surprise to me – we had two weeks of -10 °C (and below) during the day; the M9 was far more comfortable to hold in this weather than without a case. Without the halfcase, it feels like you’re holding a block of ice after half an hour already (even with gloves).

I leave the case at home when planning to use a monopod. I don’t do this often though.

People really use these ugly things?

Yep, I hold my M8 with the strap wrapped around my wrist. The ½ case then provides a bit more grip when raising the camera to my eye - esp M8 & 50/1.4 chrome is a rather heavy combination. Never considered using thumbs-up or grip & don't plan to even under duress. The additional removal of the ½ case is a negligible extra time factor, I usually just undo one of the two press buttons and the ½ case swings away sideways, while staying attached to the strap. This prevents it from falling into a ravine while juggling with the baseplate etc.

Whether due to the half case or not, but my M8 is still mint as new, as far as I can determine (except for the cat museum sticker on the top plate). SWMBO will confirm that I do not tend to take too much care of my earthly possessions.

Great stuff. :)

I use the RSS grip you have, and have added a couple strips of textured tape to help keep a firm hold without having to squeeze the handgrip. Some of these strips are sold by the foot and used on stair-steps to enhance traction. They are easy to trim to any shape with scissors. I get mine in the US at ACE hardware and use them on many things. (My hands are mildly handicapped.)

Perhaps I owe you a picture of it.

I'm with Lars.

My M9 sits in my camera bag naked most of the time, and that's the way I like it, with the original Leica strap. I like the look, and I like the feel of the vulancite. But, if I'm out and about with one lens and no bag (putting the camera on the car dashboard or in a bag with other things), I use my Luigi half case - it just stops scratches and things with are unnecessary.

Cheers

John

Using a half case means my camera is half naked. I love the mystery. Half naked is a turn on. When people take all their clothes off, for example, all the mystery is gone.

Seriously...

I use the half case because it offers better grip. In the past I've only ever used chunky DSLRs (and still like them, BTW). Some of these cameras were bigger than my face, and I'm used to telephoto lenses that are longer than my arm. So it makes sense to scale down to a camera that can still be securely held in the hand without thinking it'd slip between my fingers and onto the pavement.

It's never bothered me that a half case is in the way of a battery or card change. If we take photography 'slow', the battery lasts ages, and so does a common 8GB card, even for shooting RAW. And besides, if I ever needed to change any of these while on a trip, it isn't that difficult to think ahead, and do the change while sitting down to have a break and a refreshing drink. Doesn't hurt to sit down for just a few minutes, unless you're a war photographer, in which case a 'slow boat' is a 'dead boat'.

Anyway, the half case for my M8 came as part of a package deal when I bought the lot second hand off somebody else. It looked and felt great at the time...fell in love with it straight away and saw no need to change.

- Better grip

- lower shutternoise

- bottom- protection when put on a rough surface for support

- not to underrate: camouflage;

With the flap up, only a real connoisseur is able to detect, that this digital-M is indeed digital.

With most other people asking unwanted questions you can get away as >>oldschool<<

and even get pitied.

Before the flap I never was pitied, quite a nice sideeffect, just try.

best

GEORG
