Advertisement Posted June 24, 2012 Posted June 24, 2012 Hi bill, Take a look here Who wants a lens sub forum?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MichaelRabern Posted June 24, 2012 Share #42 Posted June 24, 2012 But... but... but... without a dedicated, multi-branched lens sub-forum how do you know which lens to choose to take those pictures...?? Regards, Bill Your a funny guy. But...But...Don't you already know, there is already a dedicated multi-branched sub-forum for those picture takers...?? Being a Leica forum, that already has very robust picture forum, I am sure there would be a helpful member, moderator or Leica Ambassador that would help answer questions or share sage advice about what lens to choose to take those pictures. I think the OP post is very sound. It would be good to point out that there are only so many cameras and many more lenses. Yet within the Forum more is dedicated to cameras and nothing to lenses. Unless, as its been pointed out, you search 400,000 or so multilingual posts or browse the Leica Customer Forum--KISS! When I came here for the first time I thought It was out of place that there was no place for lenses. (a week ago?) It was fairly clear there is much admonishment on the part of the seniors here if you make error. If any lens forum was here I would think it would serve the Leica forum well. I think I will go take some snapshots of my pets, kids, and maybe lunch. (Now only which lens to choose?) Catch you on the flip side!
IWC Doppel Posted August 4, 2012 Share #43 Posted August 4, 2012 Any more thoughts on this ? I for one would still like one
MichaelRabern Posted August 4, 2012 Share #44 Posted August 4, 2012 Any more thoughts on this ? I for one would still like one Me, too. (gentlemanly) After some thought on my end, I think the customer forum is simple mislabeled by subtitle: The Leica Customer Forum is the place for discussions about the Leica in general, what is not covered by the more specialised sections Could be better sub-titled as: The Leica Customer Forum is the place for discussions about the Leica in general, what is not covered by the more specialised sections , such as lenses. Lenses are a big part of the Leica repertoire, yet its left to be a charlie foxtrot. V/r Michael
Michael Geschlecht Posted August 4, 2012 Share #45 Posted August 4, 2012 Hello Michael, I think if you add "such as lenses" it creates a more lens oriented Forum subtitle. I think part of the reason this Foum subtitle is currently written the way it is, is: It is the catch-all for everything not covered elsewhere. A place where everything not considedered elsewhere has an equal place. It's good to have a category where everything not covered elsewhere has an equal place. MichaelRabern Posted August 4, 2012 Share #46 Posted August 4, 2012 HI Michael, Agree with all points. I appreciate your post's. Very concise and well thought. I was being discursive, the Leica Customer Forum is the de facto Lens Sub-Forum. In my limited observation, I think the will is lacking. V/r Michael +1, for a lens sub-forum, for IWC Doppel's thread resurrection.

lamefrog Posted August 4, 2012 Share #48 Posted August 4, 2012 One solution would be to add tags to individual threads This would provide the ability to organize (aggregate) threads in any number of ways ( lens , manufacturer, focal length etc ) The beauty is that it is very flexible and extensible and the basic hierarchy of the forum will not have to be modified to accomodate new taxonomy requests The creator of a thread could pick the tags from a multiple list dropdown Philippe
Peter H Posted August 5, 2012 Share #49 Posted August 5, 2012 I'd much prefer not to have a lens forum. I think it would diminish the User Forum considerably, in a number of ways.

Peter H Posted August 6, 2012 Share #51 Posted August 6, 2012 Prey tell. V/r Michael Since you ask: I find the discussions about lenses on this forum work perfectly well as they are, as part of the customer forum. I fear that hiving them off will mean fewer people will be attracted to the customer forum because they'll go straight to the lens section. That would mean they'd miss the serendipitous collection of unpredictable items that you'd never go looking for but can often be delightful to find. Secondly I fear that a specific lens sub forum might encourage even more competitive "lens A is better than lens B" squabbles than we already have. In fairness its not too bad here at all, but it does surface from time to time; far less frequently than it does on other forums that do have dedicated lens sections. Finally, to my mind it would yet another example of the type of fragmentation that means we increasingly only read and think about what we know we're already interested in, and close our minds to much else. This sounds a bit heavy I know, but its happening a great deal in all sorts of media and I'd like to resist it unless there are some real benefits. And I can't see the advantage in creating yet more sub forums. Its not as though we can't talk about anything we like, and it is very easy to find things here. Michael Geschlecht Posted August 6, 2012 Share #53 Posted August 6, 2012 Hello Peter, You are right: Learning something new you hadn't thought about is a good reason to keep some portions more all inclusive. When you go to an a dictionary printed on paper to find out how to spell Penelope you also find out what a pendulum is. Best Regards, Michael
MichaelRabern Posted August 7, 2012 Share #54 Posted August 7, 2012 Peter, Very sage, I see the rightness within your points. I don't know the customer behavior as well as others here. I only speak for myself and my experiences. I have explored much here at my own will to learn and when I made specific efforts to learn of lenses I found it displeasing. Again, your points were well received here. Thank you. V/r Michael
andybarton Posted August 20, 2012 Share #55 Posted August 20, 2012 The will is not lacking. This kind of thing is being discussed behind the scenes. spylaw4 Posted August 20, 2012 Share #56 Posted August 20, 2012 At first glance the new structure seems comprehensive and reasonable for today's products. But might it be better to wait until after Photokina and incorporate any new product? Or maybe you've got that already and aren't showing it?
