Filter Size - Elmarit 28/2.8

Hi All, new here, having a mid-life crisis and returning to the "M" fold, with a recently acquired M8. I started work with an M2 and a Rollei TLR, many years ago. (still have the Rolle too).

In buying the M8, I also found locally a couple of "tie me over" lenses. One is an Elmar-M 50/2.8, which is the collapsable version. I am pedantic about not collapsing it, but suspect I might sell it and get the Summicron perhaps.

The other is an Elmarit 28/2.8, and the limited digging I have done leads me to believe it is a "third version" lens.It is a "Leitz Canada" lens with a serial number of 25246XX.

I bought the 28/2.8 with the rationale that it will possibly approximate the ubiquitous 35mm lens. So far I am quite happy with it.

The biggest snag I have is that obviously with the M8 I need an IR/UV filter, even though I have been too keen to wait, and have tried a few shots without.

If it is a "third version" lens, then by all accounts it should have a 49mm filter size, correct? In furthering this I have tried a few 49mm filters, and no, they will not screw on, annoyingly. It's close, but not quite. Interestingly, another hobby of mine is astro-imaging, and to this end I have some CCD filters. These are known as a "two inch" filter, but the thread is M48, so 48mm. One of these (an IR/UV cut filter) actually screws on. Not what I would class as perfectly, but it attaches. I tried it this afternoon, outside, and it certainly gives a different image to the lens bare, not filter.

While I don't really want to have to use this astro IR/UV, I wonder if anyone can enlighten me to the correct filter size. I wondered if it is a "series" filter size?? Any ideas?

Well, if you look up your lens in the wiki on this site, if it a version 3 it does appear that it should take an E49mm filter. However, the version 2 takes a Series 7 filter in the hood or an E48 screw in filter (I have the 3.4 Super Angulon which takes the hood 12501 which is also the 28mm v.2 listed hood), so its more likely that you have the version 2. FWIW I have also found that it is also possible to fit a 49mm filter into the hood in place of the Series 7 filter, or of course to use a series 7 filter which is available as a UV/IR too (I have one).

From your quoted serial number it does appear that your lens is more likely to be a version 2. Although it lies within the range of numbers actually listed as ascribed to the version 2 lenses, it isn't listed as one actually ascribed to a version 2 lens. No doubt someone with more knowledge of the intricacies of Leica's serial numbering 'system' will be able to help better on this.

Thank you both for your replies, I kept an eye on the posting, then saw it had been moved, doh.

I think you are right, E48, and 2nd version, not 3rd. No matter, it seems a nice lens, and good enough for me at the moment.

In desperation I secured locally an E46 IR/UV, and will try a step-down ring, M48 to accept the E46 fiber. Hopefully it won't vignette, but only time will tell.

Thanks again

Gary

I am facing the same dilemma as OP.  I own the Elmarit 28 2.8 version II, and I have the hood. I understand that I need a series 7 E48 IR filter and retaining ring. I am having  difficulty determining if all "series 7" retainer rings are same thread size. In Ebay ads, I will frequently see "series 7" with no reference to thread size. Many of these ads do reference use on Elmarit 135 lens, but mention nothing about 28 2.8 lens. Are there various sizes of "series 7" retainer rings and filters?

I have no experience with the Elmarit 28/2.8 v2 but normal filters for it are E48 according to Leica specs. They are much less expensive than Series VII UV/IR filters if you can find one. Otherwise the order number of retaining ring for Series VII filters is 14161.
