IWC Doppel Posted January 19, 2012 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Any information, experience or views on cropped images that show the same field of view as a longer lens. As you will be physically closer with say a 24mm (32) or 28mm (37) on the M8 than you would be for the same shot with a 35mm on the M8 does this change the image/experience dramatically ? The reason I ask is the 21mm 'looks' much wider than any 28mm I have seen on a full frame.
Advertisement Posted January 19, 2012 Posted January 19, 2012 Hi IWC Doppel, Take a look here Talking perspective. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jonasy Posted January 19, 2012 Share #2 Posted January 19, 2012 No, focal length is just a number. What is interesting is the effective field of view (FOV), which is a function of focal length and film size. Hence you will have the same FOV with a 21mm on a M8 as 28mm on a full frame camera. FOV will determine your physical location, and the pictures from both cameras will appear equally "wide" in print.
Jeff S Posted January 19, 2012 Share #3 Posted January 19, 2012 Focal length remains constant; perspective is another matter when subject/camera distance changes. Many other threads have gone down the endless rat hole discussion debating (and/or confusing) these simple differences. It all depends how one decides to frame the image (in the VF), and then print (crop or not). Different strokes... Jeff
lct Posted January 19, 2012 Share #4 Posted January 19, 2012 Comparing M8/21 vs FF/28, if you stay at the same place and keep the same aperture, perspective will remain the same and FoV will be almost the same as well but you will have more DoF with the M8/21 combo. Do a search on the forum, you will find a lot of threads about that.
tobey bilek Posted January 19, 2012 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2012 Perspective is size relationship between near and far objects. It has nothing to do with focal length or angle of view. It depends only on where you stand. Assuming lens construction & design are the same, there will be more debth of field with a shorter lens and a wider angle of view. However if you back up to include the same angle of view with a longer focal, perspective will change, but the debth of field will be same as shorter focal up close
pgk Posted January 19, 2012 Share #6 Posted January 19, 2012 The reason I ask is the 21mm 'looks' much wider than any 28mm I have seen on a full frame. Well I use a 21mm on an M8 with a 28mm viewfinder and they match up reasonably well so I'd say that the 'wider look' you describe is due to something other than focal length;).
