Hi,

I have recently joined the Leica world (in a budget way) with a Leca CL. I can't at the moment afford any leica glass so bought a M39 Jupiter 8 50mm/f2 lens on Ebay with an adapter.

The adapter I bought said it covered 28-90 framelines, when I attatch it to the CL the 50mm frameline shows but as the turn the lens and it clicks to the mount the 50mm lines dissapear and are replaced with the 90mm ones.

Any ideas on hw to solve this, do I need a different adapter or I have heard of some people having to file down adapters?

Many thanks, Tim

Generally, to engage the 50mm framelines, you need a proper adapter for 50mm. The framelines are selected by the mount of the lens, or in this case, by the adapter. The 28/90 adapter will activate the framelines for 90mm lenses on the CL. There are adapters for 28mm + 90mm lenses, for 35mm + 135mm lenses and for 50mm + 75mm lenses. Each adapter will activate the corresponding frameline pair on an M leica. On the CL, the 28/90 adapter will activate the 90mm framelines, the 50/75 adapter will activate the 50mm framelines. Not sure what a 35/135 adpater will do -- probably nothing, since there are no corresponding framelines in a CL and the 40mm framelines always show, as far as I know.

Hi,

Many thanks for your quick responses! I thought it was 29-90 not 28 + 90. That makes sense now, I have ordered the correct adapter.

Any other suggestions for decent lenses on a budget? The Jupiter cost me about £35 with a Zorki 4 in excellent condition attached!

Thanks, Tim

The Jupiter - if you have a good example, and quality is a large variable with Russian items - is a perfectly good lens.

The other Russian lenses are worth a look of course, then there are numerous other LTM lenses, from Canon and others, but some of those can be expensive as they appeal to collectors also.

After those you take a relative leap in price/quality to the newer Voigtlander lenses, which probably offer the best compromise in terms of quality/value as you are buying new/newer glass without having to worry so much about haze, fungus, etc.

Welcome to the forum !!!

If you look around for lenses, Russians will always be unbeatable... ;) and, given that you are new to Leica, this is a great plus : to obtain fine pictures with el-cheapo lenses is a BIG satisfaction and a self-consciousness to have made a good choice.... wait a little, use the 50, then buy a pair of russians (just to say... 35+85): time of appetite for original Leitz lenses will come, just a matter of time....... unless you decide that RF isn't for you (but... don't conclude this only on the fact that maybe you have a low % of right focus... can happen with some russians... ;))
