M8 not showing the shutter speed metering

The frame lines do not need any power at all and will always be visible. They are part of the optical rangefinder and viewfinder system.

The exposure indications are part of a tiny LED display that is projected into the viewfinder.

Does the camera turn on? You may just have a flat battery or power problem?

Take it off the B setting? I know it sounds daft - but it has happened to me....

I'm relieved to learn that I'm not the only idiot who doesn't notice when his shutter speed dial is on "B" and wonders why there is not shutter speed indication in the viewfinder ... ;)

The camera turns on and I see no battery problem. I just got it back from Leica NJ where they adjusted the shutter release, checked the meter system and checked for good working order.

Oh, if it were that simple, I have moved it to and off the B. All seems to be in good working order except the LED metering display.

It is most likely that the connector of the LEDs worked itself loose. As such that would be quite a simple repair. Remove top plate and plug it in again. If you are near Leica NJ you might ask them for a fix-whilst-you-wait. Of course, if the fault is more complicated, that would not be possible.

Edit:I see: Santa Fe - I think I am closer to NJ:(

  • 3 weeks later...

Just got the M8 back from NJ. Problem was a Flex Board, Leica NJ paid for shipping both ways because they did not catch the problem the first time around. Usually NJ is 3-4 weeks turn around time, this time it as one week.
