I've ordered an Ewa Marine housing and I've got a Pelican case to keep my camera bag in on board.Any advice by members here? Â Another question: we are still looking for a really small and remote little hotel on the Florida beach. Can anybody suggest something?
Advertisement Posted February 23, 2007 Posted February 23, 2007 Hi jaapv, Take a look here Swimming with the M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stuny Posted February 23, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Jaap - Â If the Ewa marine case is one of their soft ones it is safe for snorkeling but MIGHT not be for SCUBA.
Woody Campbell Posted February 23, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Which Ewa case fits the m8?
jaapv Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #4 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Oh Woody, I'd have to ask my supplier. I ordered whilst in the shop. I will post later. Â But anybody: what focal length is advisable and how does it work with focussing? I know the water/ait/lens interface is different from the dry land, but how? Â Stuart, Don't worry, I'll snorkel with dolphins but will not follow them down. I'm not safe for scuba either
bap Posted February 23, 2007 Share #6 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Jaapv....I have been a diver for a very long time I was certified in 1976 and became an instructor in 78 and I must tell you I would never take a leica m underwater. The housings are at the best dangerous. The chance of getting your M8 wet is just to great. They make great small housings with flash and cameras for $600.00 that will do a much better job and not risk your investment. Go to scuba.com and check it out or leisurepro.com sea & sea make a very good set. The other thing is unless you have a flash and a very strong one your shots will be dull and colorless. Nikon made a film camera up to a few years ago that was great but only with their flash system you can still find it online but if you want digital look at sea&sea. If you do make a mistake the most you out is $600.00 but more likely $200.00 because your not going to mess up everything. The other question on Florida hotels is Little Palm it's a bit costly but a great find and if your coming all this way maybe it's worth it (or not) but it is a great place here is the web page http://www.littlepalmisland.com
jaapv Posted February 23, 2007 Author Share #7 Â Posted February 23, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks Bruce, I'll bear it in mind. Thanks for the tip as well - but I looked at the hotel, and at about 13.000,-- $ the week for the two of us, I could afford to mess up more than two M8's. But I admit it looks like a place I would love to stay.....
bap Posted February 24, 2007 Share #8 Â Posted February 24, 2007 I don't know what you would be looking to spend or where you want to be but Marco Island is also nice. Naples is a great little town for street photo...If you give me an idea of what you are looking for I'll make some suggestions. I knew I photographer who bought a Hotel in Marathon Florida (not sure I have the spelling right) that was very nice. He in the last year sold it but if you like I can find out more about it. It's in the Keys if that's where you want to be.
jaapv Posted February 24, 2007 Author Share #9 Â Posted February 24, 2007 Bruce, we would just like to relax on the beach in a bungalowy sort of place. i guess our price limit would be about 150$ a person a night, but we don't like fancy, just cosy and quiet on the beach. Thank you for the trouble you are taking
bap Posted February 24, 2007 Share #10 Â Posted February 24, 2007 In Marathon the place is Hawks Cay Resort but give me a few days to get all the info.
BillBrittain Posted February 24, 2007 Share #11 Â Posted February 24, 2007 I don't think this is going to work. Â I have an EWA bag which I have used successfully with my D200. Access to the controls is quite limited and I count on autofocus and shutter-priority to keep my pictures right. Focusing and zooming the Nikon would be impossible in the bag, and turning the little thumbwheels is extremely difficult. I can't imagine using the M8 under these conditions. Â Viewing through the bag is difficult. You'll need to wear a snorkel mask or goggles to see anything at all. Â Lenses used underwater are usually wide. With the Nikon I use the 17-55 at focal lengths around 28. It's very helpful to have a speedlight inside your bag too. Â White balance is tricky, I fix it in post. Â I suppose that you could zone focus and keep the camera in aperture priority mode with some success. Probably a much better option is to buy a small point-and-shoot that's rated for underwater use, I think Olympus makes a nice model.
jaapv Posted February 24, 2007 Author Share #12 Â Posted February 24, 2007 Thanks Bill, I realize that. I was thinking of using a CV 15 and putting it at 2m. Most shots would be at the water surface anyway, I'm not diving. Colour balance doesn't bother me, I always shoot raw.
wlaidlaw Posted February 24, 2007 Share #13  Posted February 24, 2007 I am off to Bimini in a few months, on a Dolphin expedition on a katamaran. Can anybody suggest something?  Jaap,  I had a week cruising and scuba diving on the great barrier reef last October. I was determined to get some underwater shots. I went and spoke to a guy at our local camera shop who is also a keen diver. Ideally I wanted a camera, which could also act as a pocket sized back-up camera, since I had had my previous Sony T9 stolen.  He recommended the Canon Digital Ixus 850 IS plus a WP-DC9 housing. It was an excellent recommendation. The little Canon not only takes good shots with its 28-110mm image stabilised zoom onto a 7Mp sensor but the housing never let in a single drop of water, in spite of my slightly exceeding its 40 metre depth limit by about 7 metres, according to my dive computer. All the controls are usable from the outside of the housing unlike many cheaper housings. If the worst had happened, I had not lost too expensive a camera. the only weakness like most of these smaller scuba cameras is the flash, which is just not strong enough. You can add an external optically triggered strobe gun if you want. The sensor is surprisingly quiet for such a small chip - much quieter than the Sony which had the same size (1/2.5"). Lastly and not, of course, to compare it with any other manufacturer, it has a comprehensive operator's manual.  Wilson Welcome, dear visitor! stuny Posted February 27, 2007 Share #19 Â Posted February 27, 2007 Jaap - Â Set everything to fully automatic, realize that water magnifies the image about 25% (so the "28" end of the D2 lens is effectively 35MM), and realize that the longer the light wavelength the quicker it is filtered out by water, making everything blue.
