I am trying to replace my broken 50mm lens, still heart broken about it. My local dealer called me and asked if I was interested in a 28mm ROM version for 2200 USD with a one year Leica Warranty. If I remembered correctly, a used set usually goes for 1200 - 1800 USD. And full MSRP is around 2100 USD. I also understand our Canon colleagues are driving the demand up. Which puts a Leica-only user like myself out of luck.

My question is, if I am shooting film and part DMR, is it worth 2200? I know the V1 will do fine on the DMR, but shooting film on the V2 lens could be fun.

I have owned and used both on film, DMR and (the layer version) on a D700

The ROM version is better all round and is the lens that sits in the D700 90% of the time. I paid the equivalent if $1,600 about 5 years ago for mine.

Do you think the used market will continue to drive prices up? The supply has been next to nothing, which does little to incite dealers to put out competitive prices.

I have a feeling my credit card bill will not be pleasant next month.

Probably. Leica aren't making any more and lots of Canon and Nikon users seem to have cottoned-on to the quality of R lenses. Plus there are the thousands of Leica R owners still waiting to see what the R solution that is supposed to be coming.

After the release of the S line, I've all but given up hope on Leica reinvesting in the R line. It's a conflicting decision for sure, their R10 could've made a killing to the Canon/Nikon line, quality is great, but with the competitive landscape today, their differentiation really lies in their M line. And I doubt this magical mirror-less solution will redefine Leica...

There have been four models of Elmarit-R 28/2.8 AFAIK: 11204 (v1, 1970-1985), 11247 (v1, 1985-1994), 11259 (v2, 1994-1997) and 11333 (v2, 1997-2009).

To my knowledge, the only documented difference between 11259 (serial # between 3,664,831 and 3,778,779) and 11333 is the lack of native ROM contacts on the former. Another difference could be that the 11259 does not hit the mirror of the Canon 5D, which is the case of mine on the 5D1. Anyway the 11259 can be found at more interesting prices and can have added ROM contacts eventually.

See for instance:

Leica R ELMARIT 2.8 28 / 28mm E55 Germany Objektiv | eBay (w/o ROM contacts)

Leica 28mm 2.8 Elmarit R Lens - 28 f2.8 - ROM | eBay (with ROM contacts)

Still remains expensive though compared to the 780 EUR i paid for a mint version with one year warranty 3 years ago.

I paid over £900 for mine.

This is the lens which the dealer refused to accept responsibility for the binding focus, leading to the lens also costing me £100 for a look-see by Leica and me vowing never to use said dealer agin.

Leica would have lost a fortune on the digital R line.
