M8 - What's the average writing time ?

I've never paid much attention to the time it takes for the photo to appear on my M8, as I use it more like a film camera. That is to say that I shoot without immediate reference to the results - I may take three or four images before looking (if at all).

So I just got the camera out and did a quick test. The image comes up on the display after about one second and the flashing red light, indication the writing of the file to card, continues for about a further five seconds.

I always shoot RAW plus JPEG, as I like to have a reserve file in case one becomes corrupted.

Hope this helps.

Mike

I agree when using it as a film camera, it won't matter a lot.

So your image appears already after a second ? That's quick.

During the 5 seconds writing, are you able to make changes (ISO and so on ...), take another picture ?

Thank You

5 seconds sound long actually. Just tried Auto Review and i got from one to three seconds with M8.2 and a full battery. I would try again with the latest firmware (2.014) and a fresh battery.

Thanks for the advice !

Obvious times vary (a lot). Previous poster mention writing times even up to one second.

Thank you

Ah. I see the question now- you are referring to the flashing of the red LED that indicates that the camera is processing the image. That has no relevance for the operation of the camera. The pre- preview appears well within a second and changes to the final preview in a short while, but you really have to watch to notice, and the camera is ready for the next shot instantly. ( that is, until you have filled the buffer with twelve shots; after that it takes about two seconds to clear one image to make space for your next shot). These times are not variable, as the file size for a DNG is fixed. If you shoot JPG or DNG there may be small differences.

This is very difficult to explain The generating of the jpg may vary, but the DNG is a fixed algorith involving pointing to a LUT resulting in a constant file size. How can the write time vary?

Yes, Ulev. The camera is fully usable immediately after exposure, so I can take new shots instantly until the buffer memory is full, either singly or in continuous mode (although I almost never use continuous).

I'm not sure how many shots fill the buffer - it will vary a little according to how quickly you repeat shots and on the speed of the SD card - but I never find it a problem.

I don't bother with fast cards for the M8 and don't use more than 4mb cards, as I prefer to change cards frequently to be sure of keeping images safe. My thinking is that if a card goes wrong, I don't want to lose a lot of images.

You seem to be asking two questions:

  • How long does it take for the review image to appear?
  • How long does it take for the camera to write the image to card?

The camera generates the DNG first, then the JPG. So if you're writing DNG+JPG to card, the time will be longer than writing DNG only.

The review image appears (if set to appear) just a second or so after the picture is shot.

IIRC, some people reported some loss of image files after playing with the controls while waiting for the camera to clear its buffer, but that was with the M9 and has been corrected in the latest M9 firmware release. I don't remember that any problem occurred with the M8 in such circumstances.
