XK Commemorative M6 and Elmar-M on eBay - too good to be true ??

There is an XK commemorative M6 and matching Elmar-M on Fleabay UK at the moment from a seller with zero feedback. It shows up at the bottom of the forum as well. Now I know that every seller has to start somewhere but this sale and the current price looks a little too good to be true. OK if you buy with Paypal and a credit card, you are protected albeit with a lot of hassle and paperwork to get your money back. The last XK commemorative that was for sale on Fleabay had an asking price of $17,869. The current bid price on the UK one is only £745 with only a few hours to go. If it was genuine, you would have thought the seller would have photographed it in its wooden presentation case or at least mentioned it. All he says is that it comes in its original retail packaging. I am afraid I think it is a scam.

What do others think?

Luigi,

I have more than enough Leicas (about 5 too many my wife would say). This would be a buy and then put it in the right auction (Tamarkin or Westlicht). The whole idea of commemoratives does not thrill me, as they are not really intended for use.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Well, in this mood one could even try... ;) Me too sometime like the idea to have fun with a pure speculation on a Leica item (but the only time I could have done, I finally got in love with the lens of a lucky episode... :o)

But you say the seller has no feedback... I never bought nor sod on ebay, but think that the picture of a M6 XK is not difficult to find somewhere...

Luigi,

The price has now rocketed to over £2,000 with an hour to go. I put in a bid for £1250 on the grounds that this was the profits I had made on a couple of lens swaps during the year. If it was a scam, I could have all that fun getting my money back from Paypal. I am a member of the Paypal Panel and I have a private phone number to Paypal UK, so it might not have been too painful.

I have only ever had one major problem on eBay where I paid by cheque (pre Paypal back in 2001) for a Minox C, which turned out to have been immersed in salt water. eBay were useless in getting my money back. However for Leica stuff I much prefer to buy, sell and swap with Forum members, as if one or other parties is not happy, one can always reverse the deal.

No my top bid was less than half at £1250. That was all the spare cash I had at the moment.

Was it worth the price it got, assuming this wasn't a scam?

I'm on a hi-fi forum and the guys there were reporting on a Naim amplifier that 'sold' six times the other day on e-bay for £1600.

Assuming it was not a scam, I would guess it might fetch $10,000+ at a Tamarkin auction. This might be the most sought after M6 special, as there were only 50 made.

Hifi prices are another interesting subject. I am about to sell off a whole lot of my surplus equipment including Musical Fidelity and Quad stuff. It is just a matter of putting things on the auction at a time when a lot of folks are trying to buy what you are selling, to get a good price.

I ended up getting a Krell KAV300iL amplifier earlier this year for a silly low price because it was a Japanese model set for 100V. 15 minutes with a meter and set of Torx drivers and it was reset to 240V.

Hi Wilson, interesting re the camera I'm sure we'll find out soon enough it was dodgy.

Re Hi-fi, I use these three sites below. Niam stuff is best sold in pinkfish and valve stuff/ high end stuff best sold on hifi wigwam and musical fidelity stuff on av forums.

Best time to sell hi-fi IMO is in the autumn, summer is a waste of time due to people being outside and this time of the year is a struggle but as per usual good stuff sells all of the time no matter what. The Krell amps and so on always sell so to does Bryston etc.

At the moment I'm trying to sell two Sugden class A amps but to be honest it's a bit of a struggle but I think I've finally sold one of them.

Ebay's fees are way too expensive for high end stuff like Leica and Hifi & watches etc IMO. and as a result selling on those forums below you can drop the price by about 4% or so and still make decent money.

Regards,

Tony

Well, I'm not on some paypal panel (what is that exactly?) nor do I have their private hotline, but I can say that getting a refund when I was scammed a few months ago was a very straightforward process, all conducted via e mail.

James,

Because I had had a Paypal account for ten years and was one of the first UK members, they asked me if I would join a users' panel a few months ago. You get sent regular questionnaires on purchases and other surveys. These have either a cash draw prize or you get a small credit to your Paypal account. You get sent a telephone number to use if you ever need an issue sorted and belong to a users forum

I think after quite a bit of prodding from the credit card companies and also financial control bodies both national and EU, PP have become somewhat less awkward in honouring their commitments, over the last couple of years. It is good to hear that your problem was quickly solved. From what I read on the users' panel forum, this is still not the case too frequently. We have tried to explain to PP that given the amount of money they make, a good reputation for being straightforward and honest, is more important than chiselling an extra few pounds on denying claims. Not 100% sure we are getting that message over.

This is the very first 1998 Leica M6 Jaguar XK 50th Anniversary Special Edition. Photos courtesy of an anonymous Leica collector who was offered the camera but did not buy it. Compared to the price No. 1/50 sold for (which I am not permitted to divulge), I would think that the Ebay offering at £2850 was about ££right - especially considering the seller has no feedback. No 01/50 commanded a premium price by virtue of its absolutely pristine condition, unique number and interesting provenance. I have seen the camera and it is the most beautiful M6 I have ever seen. When gauging the prices of limited edition M6 models the fact that so many special editions have been produced has to be considered eg in the Leica Pocket Book there are 24 different models illustrated/described. TTBOMK M6 Jaguar 01/50 is still in the Northern hemisphere and is likely to stay there. :-)

I recall talking to my local Leica dealer in Lewes about this around 1999, Stuart Bean at H.A.Baker. Stuart was ex Leica UK. He had had one on sale for some time. I cannot remember the exact price but it was not far short of £4000 in 1999! His view was that Leica had got it totally wrong and it should have had a 50 Summicron or Summilux. This would have tempted the type of person who could afford nearly £4000 for this sort of camera. If this is not a scam, then I think the buyer has a bit of a bargain for an unused example at less than 1999 price.

Packaging and camera are super wow ! But I find the XK engraving too big for my taste...

I fell in love with it when I saw it. If you can imagine a Jaguar XK owner with the camera at Goodwood the engraving begins to make sense. And the lens is probably every bit as good as the Summicron within the same apertures. The Summicron was not available when the XK 120 was first available - hence the Elmar.
