I am checking lenses today as there is a bit of sun.The 25 Snapshot Shopar is terrible on the M8. Worst I have ever seen in my 69 years. The right ride is sharp, center not quite acceptable, and the left a total smear. Never noticed this on film before.

All my M film lenses check out fine with e 50 2.8 and 904.0 last versions of both are totally outstanding.

Sample variation is a problem with CV lenses. The 25/4 is not as good as the 21/4 but it is quite a sharp lens in the center if you are lucky enough to find out a good copy.

Being a street shooter using flash for fill during the day and all night long I am loving my el cheapo Voigtlander 21mm f/4 II. Works great for in your face Gilden-style photography and if god forbid I ever had to take a *gasp* landscape shot it's wide enough to do that too. Let's just hope it doesn't come to that though...

I use a CV 35mm 1.2 as my usual lense and am very happy with it, except for its size and weight. I also have a CV 15mm which I use rarely , but definitely when needed (did some recent indoor shots, as well as hockey arena shots that would not have been possible with another lense). I have a Leica Summicron C 40m which is WONDERFUL in terms of its size...it is so small and unobtrusive. The major problem with that lense is that I do not have the factory shade, and thus I am subject to significant lense flare if shooting within the zone of the sun. I have a leica summicron 90mm lense which i have used once in the past two years, definitely thinking of selling due to marginal utility, and when used seems to have some focus issues at infinity. I think I would really like to dump my 90 and get a 24 or 21mm lense.

There are many ways to address this AFAIK:

1- Order a second hand sample of the original Leitz rubber hood (# 12518) as well as a series 5.5 IR-cut filter from B+W (utterly advised for color works). See for instance 12518 hood on e**y. Those filters are not easy to find out though.

2- DIY variant: replace the series 5.5 IR-cut filter by the glass of a 39mm one (Leica User Forum).

3- Easier way: screw a 39mm IR-cut filter onto the lens, but don't do it too tightly though as it has not the same filter thread as that of the lens. Then screw the 12518 hood onto the filter. Causes no vignetting with M8/M8.2.

4- Cheaper way: screw a 39mm IR-cut filter onto the lens as above and screw a 39mm 3rd party vented hood (mine is a Heavystar) onto the filter. No vignetting problem either...

5- ... or use the same 3rd party hood with a series 5.5 IR-cut filter and an adapter ring: Heavystar hood with adapter on e**y. Same availability problem of series 5.5 IR-cuts as above though.
