frostfire90 Posted December 11, 2011 Share #1 Posted December 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all, I've done quite an extensive research on the different types of 35mm f2 summicron types, however this particular one has baffled me. The serial number is #2329069, according to Leica wiki (http://test.www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/Summicron_(I)_f%3D_3.5_cm_1:2), this one should be a version I summicron. However, the exterior design of this lens resembles that of type II summicron. Pictures of the lens below: http://img.iwascoding.com/2/2011/12/11/70/E866A960409F4402AF2847D8B250420F.jpg http://img.iwascoding.com/2/2011/12/11/44/7ABFEE6C15F546B29978D186F69BC45F.jpg http://img.iwascoding.com/2/2011/12/11/E4/FBD7993FBCC542098D7B06EDD36AF5B5.jpg Leica wiki website also shows that serial number from 2316001, they belong to type II summicrons as shown here: http://test.www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/35mm_f/2_Summicron_II As such, i'm really curious as to whether this lens is the 6-element or 8-element one without dismantling the lens to find out the number of groups/elements. I noticed this one has a tab on the aperture ring, so it seems more towards a type II summicron. Are any experts able to provide any insights? Thanks! adan Posted December 11, 2011 Share #6 Posted December 11, 2011 As always - Leica assigned (may still do so) serial numbers for lens types (focal length/aperture - but NOT a specific "version") in blocks of roughly 1,000-3,000. If they got part way through a block and a new version of the lens was introduced, they continued to use the previously assigned numbers for the new version of the lens, rather than: a) keep making an obsolete design just to use up the numbers, or discard those left-over numbers and start a new number sequence for the new lens design. Your lens is a very early version 2, using a left-over number from that last block of 2000 numbers assigned in 1969 for whatever 35 Summicrons were to be made. Version 1 at the beginning, but version 2 by the time they'd made all 2000.

Why is the s/n 2.393.xxx in the lens' picture and 2.395.xxx in the warranty card ?
