Leica allegiance wobble?

I have just traded my Leica D-Lux 4 for the Fujifilm X-10, primarily because I value the viewfinder. Until now, I have been solidly Leica and have the Digilux3, the X1 and the C-Lux2. The X1 (with viewfinder and case) is three times the price of the X-10 and the intrinsic impression is similar. I don't doubt the superior quality of the Leica lenses, but the X-10 provides the useful zoom facility. Initial shots with the X-10 are excellent. The contrast between the X1 and the X-10 is simplicity versus sophistication. At the moment, I sense that the X-10 will be a versatile and quality instrument. However, the X1 is a Leica!

Hi. and I sold my X1 and bought the X100. see my other treath. Love the Fuji and it is so more camera than the X1.Remind me to the M4. Love the viewfinder(s) I also had all the digiluxes 1,2,3, M4. Hasselblad, etc. so I have some reason to compare...:)

Well, i think everybody knows Toyota Camry is way cheaper than Audi A6. It also uses less gas, needs less maintenance, and can run as fast (well not exactly, but enough). However, why are people still buying Audi's?

I'm not sure if this comparison makes sense in this case, as the Leica gains no additional functionality simply by being a Leica. In this case it's like the Toyota can run faster and has all those benefits, plus price.

Yes there are, the brand, the look, the prestige of having a Leica. Otherwise, it's just the same camera, with similar functionality.

Try to avoid a crash in a A6 versus a Camry, i.e. roadholding, breaking system. And then you will happily pay the premium for the German make. There is a reason for the price difference. But it is not a meaningful comparison anyway, as the carmarket is highly competitive and differences in prices are marginal.

Hi Rudi, one of the best reasons to own a Leica is that they have forums like these..........I suppose thats why you keep hanging about even after you sold that lousy leica for that fantastic fuji....and where are you going to post your images now..........:)

Yes - and? There are many brands out there, each with their own customer base. If camera XYZ suits you better than a Leica, be happy. As long as you get the images you want.

Again those apple vs orange comparos. The Fuji X10 is a small sensor camera and the X1 is an APS-C camera. Not the same beast, not the same DoF, not the same lens, not the same price and not the same blooming artefacts fortunately for Leica.

Feels like having a Leica needs to be defended over and over again: I like it with my heart, not with my mind. It can take good pictures like nearly all good cameras as long as the photographer has a view and knows the basics. I am thinking of buying an X1, even if my mind says that I should better buy a follow up of the X100 Fuji - which will hopefully have a good user interface and menu structure. And still I'd go for the X1, just because I am sensitive to a brand and a design.

MarkL,

If one is serious about photography I presume that one would find a camera that fits in with ones vision and way of taking photographs.....whatever camera that may be........to buy a camera and then subjugate ones vision and requirements to that of the camera seems to be the way of beginners and camera collectors.......if the x100 suits your style better why would you go for the X1 and vice versa..? I have not personally even looked at the X100, bought my X1 before its time, but if I have to do it over today I would definitely have a look at both.....especially with the kind of money one has to pay for them......

Brand loyalty is much overrated. Some years ago I remember reading a post by someone who wrote that he would start scanning film and printing digitally only if Leica made a scanner, since then he would "know it would be good". Yeah, right.

I've always liked using the M6, but never took to the M8.2 that I bought and had a disastrous experience with my M9, which had a cracked sensor glass righl oul of the store and then, after repair, at Solms had to go back a couple of weeks later for a "processor fault". I sold It and never looked back. What I value most are my seven Leica lenses, some of which I use happily with the Ricoh GXR-M — indeed more happily than I did with either the M8.2 or, more briefly, with the M9. I'll certainly look careful at the M10, or whatever new full frame solutions comes out for using M-lens, but I wouldn't try to get one of the earliest ones coming out, as I did with the M9.
