doubice Posted December 7, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted December 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just came upon this while looking for an M8.2. Auction text is a jpg file, with an invitation to contact the seller directly via email. Seems to be an account of an antique dealer, all of a sudden he/she started selling high-end photo gear, all priced about US$1,510.00...... Â This is not the first time this listing format has been tried by a scammer..... Â Have reported to eBay and contacted the affected seller, just wanted to make sure that nobody from this forum gets taken...... doubice Posted December 7, 2011 Author Share #2 Â Posted December 7, 2011 All photography-related items removed by eBay already - that was fast! The seller only had about 5 regular items running, rest was about 200 cameras, lenses etc. All Leica, Nikon and Canon....... Â Jan

doubice Posted December 8, 2011 Author Share #6 Â Posted December 8, 2011 are you saying not to buy off ebay ? Â What James meant was never to trade outside of the eBay platform when responding to eBay auctions. Trade on eBay, rather than off eBay. jaques Posted December 8, 2011 Share #7 Â Posted December 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) this issue is as old as the hills- it occurs every day. Thousands of ebay accounts are hacked- expensive items are listed well below the actual price (photos and descriptions are usually stolen from legitimate auctions)- and the 'seller' always asks that you contact them outside of the ebay process... Â These accounts are usually discovered pretty quickly- and the fake listings removed. Â For a while there more than 50% of listings for Hasselblad digital backs and cameras were fake like this. Expensive items are heavily targeted. Â Only a fool would fall for these scams: but there must be an absolute surplus of fools out there because these scams just go on and on. They would certainly stop if they were never successful. As they say 'there is a sucker born every minute'. Â that old addage is still the gold standard on ebay as elsewhere: "If it sounds too good to be true- it probably is".
earleygallery Posted December 8, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted December 8, 2011 are you saying not to buy off ebay ? Â What Jan said. Â Classic sign of a hacked account is a notice to e mail the 'seller' who will then request money to be deposited by bank transfer. As it's a hacked account they can't trade through the eBay system anyway, and as a buyer you have no protection at all!
Studio58 Posted December 8, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted December 8, 2011 I recently advertised a 1DS3 on Ebay and I had a very convincing scam attempt pulled on me. Fortunately, I am very cautious and multiple check everything. Â On the other hand, I have bought most of my Leica gear on Ebay. Mind you it is from Kurland, Popflash and the like. jaques Posted December 9, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted December 9, 2011 I must have purchased 100 cameras on ebay- and sold nearly 2000 over 10 years. I have never run into a serious problem- but I have seen it all- many attempts and near scams. Once you really understand the system it is relatively easy to protect yourself. For the novice- and for the naive- it certainly can be an uncertain market to enter. On the other hand it is the largest and oftentimes cheapest market for camera gear that exists. bpalme Posted December 9, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted December 9, 2011 If you've been around ebay for a while these kind of scams are there all the time. The go through a lot of effort so I suppose someone occasionally falls for this stuff.
bbroad@777 Posted December 9, 2011 Share #12 Â Posted December 9, 2011 This thread is very helpful because not all people buying on eBay is cautious.
