intex Posted February 20, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) With lens reading enabled, my new M8 is not reading the lens. The lens is brand new with the 6-bit coding. Any ideas?
Advertisement Posted February 20, 2007 Posted February 20, 2007 Hi intex, Take a look here Leica M8 not reading TriElmar 16-18-21 lens. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted February 20, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted February 20, 2007 The reason the camera appears not to read the lens is because the lens code does not change as you select the focal length. Therefore the camera knows the lens is mounted but can only guess what the selected focal length is. It therefore keeps quiet when it comes to the info window and exif header. Â It remains to be seen how Leica will handle in-camera processing which depends on the selected focal length such as the cyan correction when an IR cut filter is mounted. There's no point ducking the issue, it's a major design flaw.
sdai Posted February 20, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted February 20, 2007 I suspect Leica will find a decent method to work this out ... especially when you consider the WATE is a "TRUE" zoomer - how does the camera figure that out without any electronic link? it's not three fixed focal lengths. Â You have to admit the 6 bit coding scheme is quite lame and in this case, it's defeating its own purpose.

jonoslack Posted February 20, 2007 Share #5 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Hi There I had a long discussion with Solms about this. Â Mine is inspirational and definitely Walter Mitty - it's never admitted to being a 50mm lens, but occasionally it tells the truth at 28 and 35, but it does like to be a 121mm lens too! Â I'd just sent mine over there for coding, and was a little disturbed by this idiosyncratic and anarchic behaviour. They apologised, and said that it'd be fixed with the 1.1 firmware. Â Well, that's what they said - and they've been so helpful, I definitely believe them.

There's no point ducking the issue, it's a major design flaw. Well, my guess is that it was designed as a film lens and as such these things do not matter at all. The TE has active feedback of the selected focal trough the frame line selector. The WATE designers didn't see the need for this as the framelines required aren't supported on the M8, M7 or any other M for that matter. Â The only solution open to Leica, provided they determine that the cyan shift needs different tweeks for each focal length, is to let the operator select the focal length in use from a menu. There is no way the camera can detect it automatically. The menu option would be a good thing, it opens a door many would like to see come off it's hinges
marknorton Posted February 20, 2007 Share #7 Â Posted February 20, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jono, different lens, the 28-35-50 works fine, it's the 16-18-21 which is the problem.

LOL Sorry, it's a little late, and possibly a glass or two too much. but the 28-35-50 doesn't work fine either (it takes fine photos, but thinking it's a 121mm lens is a little too much!). wlaidlaw Posted February 20, 2007 Share #9 Â Posted February 20, 2007 If every single M8 owner emailed Leica asking for manual lens coding, do we think they would pay attention? Well, more say than the UK government appears to be going to do for a 1.7 million signature petition against road pricing - sorry about the politics guys! Should I start a thread? IMHO, It may have more impact if someone near Solms hand-delivered the results, rather than it getting diluted in the mass of emails and phone calls.  Guy, with all due respect, it would be helpful, to me at least, if you defined the 'they' and 'we' in your response so efforts to get the point across are not duplicated.  Robbe Gibson
tom0511 Posted February 22, 2007 Share #13 Â Posted February 22, 2007 I am pretty sure that with the new firmware 16-18-21 can be choosen in the menue of the M8 when using the wate. Â Has anybody compared the wate with the 21/2.8asph or with the 15CV?
