Terrible new problem after upgrading firmware

In reply to Mike's question, I've now confirmed that the black frames are not simply accidental shutter releases, but failed exposures. I'm pretty confident I didn't press the shutter differently on these occasions than others. As I mentioned, I'm going to run another thorough shooting test this week. I'll report back on what I find.

Jeff,

please pay attention to the sound the shutter mechanism makes !

The sound prior to a black frame is significantly different from a regular shutter release sequence.

Kind regards.

Yesterday morning, I upgraded to the newest Leica M9 firmware.

I was using the same Sandisk card that I've used without difficulties in the past.

One intention of the new firmware was to solve a card problem. I would try a fresh card. The card, you are using is possibly formatted for the "old" firmware.

Yesterday morning, I upgraded to the newest Leica M9 firmware. Then I shot about 100 images later in the day. More than half of the images are pure black. I am absolutely confident that this isn't user error (lens cap left in place, massive underexposure), and I've never had this problem before. Moreover, I was using the same Sandisk card that I've used without difficulties in the past. Has anyone else experienced this??

Hi jrovner, Yes I have faced this problem recently. This was because I accidentally shifted the Shutter Speed dial on top of my M9 to 4000 instead of A. Hence all my photos turn out black? can this be your problem instead of the firmware or card?

Just check the info on the pure black photos and it will show the shutter speed setting to 1/4000 ?

Same problem with me.

I had about 30 normal, then 6 black captures in a row, then 40 normal but i don't know if any picture is missing. Used my 16 GB Ultra Sandisk. No problems with my 2 Gb Ultra Sandiks.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about problems. I had exactly the same error early this year with my M9 with firmware 1.162. I had to send to Leica for repair. No report was given after repair of problem. Before I sent camera for repair I checked with different cards, settings (jpeg / DNG), lenses, etc. I could see files with correct size, but only black frames however I tried.

So my conclusion is that might not be related to firmware. I dont know if rollback to older firmware is possible to test?

The EXIF settings on my black frames were normal. Nothing stopped down further than f/4 or faster than 1/250. So the blackness wasn't caused by exposure. And having shot 10,000 frames with this camera, and never having had a black frame before, I very much doubt that I suddenly began pressing the shutter differently 40 times in a row. I suspect my camera will be going in for a check up.

Actually the problem just happened to me- on a Digilux2 and a Memorette 4 Gb SD card. I switched to playback too fast during startup and it killed off five files producing full-sized blank images. The next shot was blank too.

Hoi Jaap,

really of all the stories this is the weirdest !

So you're suggesting that the camera "blanked" five previously good images ?

Dear oh dear ...

But is it blank as white or blank as black ?

My black frames came at random, nothing to do with startup or sleep mode afaik.

I could make a couple of consecutive shots without problem then a black frame occurred and the next shot was fine again.

Kind regards.

Actually one image changed before my eyes. It was fine and when I switched back to it it had turned blank.:confused: Black blank and numbered L------- .

Jaap :

This sounds like a directory entry is corrupted ?.

Have you tried recovery software to find the data stream of the lost images ?.

This would be very instructive.

Proper firmware should not exhibit any of the behaviors described in this stream.

Not having seen the code, I can only guess, but it seems as if the software is in some instances presuming how long something might take and then proceeding, rather than assuming a 'wait' state and proceeding upon a 'post'.

Regards ... Harold

No - I was walking and reformatted the card, took one shot after that. I might try it through Rescue Pro.

I had the same idea about a corrupted header, as the file size is still there after such files become unreadable. That would mean R.P. could convert it to a TIFF, which can be renamed DNG. What would happen if one runs such a file through Adobe's DNG converter, I wonder?

If it is the directory I guess the tool of choice would be Disk Warrior.

Well, happened to me with an M9 this week on firmware 1.174... first time it happened after some 10.000 clicks... a black frame...

However, mine seems to be related to the black frame caused by the shutter.

There was the sort of rewinding sound (re-cocking?) but the much noisier regular shutter sound was lacking, and the resulting frame was black.

The photo is taken, but the shutter stays put, was my idea...

Don't think this issue has anything to do with the SD card. Never had any problems with my one card, and the black frame was on the card... seems more like an electronic glitch to me or something with the shutter release button, since I had the exposure locked (second position) for quite a while before I fully pressed. Somehow I think that might be related...

I tried to reproduce it, but couldn't, and the next 200 picutures there was no problem at all.

Not sure if this is similar to what others experienced. The shutter sound was different with 'my' black frame, very noticable...

Hi, I also experienced this problem same as yours...
