Jeff S Posted November 18, 2011 Author Share #21  Posted November 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Jeff, that's not the way I read the article. We've many times rehashed the fact that an M camera can't be built for much less than the current crop.  Puts says something has to come into the lineup between the M and the X, and that the M will have a much smaller percentage of the business in future. I don't see anything suggesting a less expensive M.  You're probably right, Howard. Not the first time I've found Puts' writing style more than a bit convoluted and syntax challenged. (But, I wouldn't want to write in his native language.)  Jeff

tobey bilek Posted November 20, 2011 Share #25 Â Posted November 20, 2011 At $7000 per body, the market will saturate fast. Â Working PJ no longer use Leica in significant numbers. The need for security has taken that away many years ago. Â How big is the market for S2? not big enough. Virtually no amateurs will buy into it. Â How much can they make with rebadged Japanese cameras ? Not enough to keep them alive. Who will pay 30% more for the Red Dot and panned obsolesence. Â And the price of lenses. Only the rich Chinese will buy in enough numbers. Â Their salvation is past glory and newly rich Chinese

Clive Murray-White Posted November 20, 2011 Share #28  Posted November 20, 2011 These speculative threads are always a good fun suck in, I don't agree that there's a genuinely reduced need for larger sensor cameras - sure much of what we do goes on the net and is heavily crunched but that's balanced by:-  The ability to be able to dramatically crop  Provide large 300dpi files for print media purposes.  Bokeh  I find I'm using my M8 at its limit most of the time and it superseded an Olympus E-3.  Naming new Leica cameras would be the easy bit M9 top of pile, M901 a cheaper option and M9001 really cheap.  Incidentally both Olympus and Leica have the same basic problem - ISO/noise  I agree that mirrorless is the potential game leader and there are several really obvious features that need to go into a mass market offering. A Fuji X100 style integrated viewfinder, Auto-focus, long lens capability, Live view + 10x magnification manual focus, probably swivel hi-res screen, awesome low light abilities- and because style means a lot to people, staggeringly good looks.  Sadly they'd have to include video.  And with all this you've got a range of cameras that can actually go head-to-head with Canikon on every level
dickgrafixstop Posted November 20, 2011 Share #29 Â Posted November 20, 2011 Were Leica to partner with another manufacturer, it would have to be one with significant resources and a long term view. Olympus may not have a long term view - or even a long term future - as the fraud investigations continue. Ricoh would have been a good candidate before it bought Pentax, Fuji seems intent on following it's own path (which seems to intersect nicely with territory Leica needs to tread). Sony has the resources, but not the vision. They've botched up the Minolta/Kyocera legacy to nearly become a non player. I would put my money on Samsung - rolling in resources and desperate to enter the photography market as a real player. Also, no legacy products to protect, excellent manufacturing capabilities and a world wide presence that could make them a formidable competitor - or ally. algrove Posted November 21, 2011 Share #31 Â Posted November 21, 2011 Does not Leica already partner with Panasonic on many levels,i.e., bodies, lens design for Panasonic?
k-hawinkler Posted November 21, 2011 Share #32 Â Posted November 21, 2011 Latest Puts Blog puts a further twist to the argument--is the 8Mpx iPhone perhaps good enough for snapshooters? Â Howard, Â I find the iPhone 4S pretty cool for quick snaps (HDR is very subtle and improves high contrast images quite a bit), even more so the video mode with stabilization. Â Apple finally copied from one of their independent developers the use of the + button on the iPhone side as a shutter button (Camera+: VolumeSnap is back, beyotches!!). So, now the Camera+ Apps has that feature again. Â I am using the iPhone 4S functionality when appropriate. Of course, I also use Leica/Leitz glass with Leica M9 and Nikon D3, D300 when appropriate as well. Â Leica doesn't need to reinvent the wheel = cellular phone. With the M10 they just should wirelessly tap into the iPhone with its additional functionality. That would feel like magic! Â Cheers, K-H.
brill64 Posted November 21, 2011 Share #33 Â Posted November 21, 2011 annie leibowitz can also be spotted recently with an x100 dangling around her neck as miss august in the lavazza 2012 calendar. her adherence to any one brand is probably purely heresay..WHOOPS!! sorry, jumped the gun a bit there. quite a tome, everything and more said in great detail but i still believe AL would append her name to anything, as great a photographer as she is...
