Eltonn Posted November 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted November 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've owned a Digilux 1 for close to ten years and still thoroughly enjoy it ... but the ring around the lens barrel is starting to fall off. Any suggestions to secure it?

ho_co Posted November 17, 2011 Share #2 Posted November 17, 2011 Elton, welcome to the forum! Are you referring to the ring on the body where the lens enters the camera? If so, that ring just screws into place. Its purpose is to serve to protect the thread used for attachment of lens accessories. Here's a quote from p 184 of the Digilux 1 manual: I'm referring to the ring identified as item 1.8 in this diagram: Just tighten it down by hand. Eltonn Posted November 18, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted November 18, 2011 Howard, Thanks for the welcome. Yes, the 1.8 assembly is quite loose. I previously read that section of the manual and tried to screw 1.9 clockwise (as I look at the camera) to tighten the ring. As I turn it clockwise, it does not secure the assembly to the body of the camera. Any thoughts?
lct Posted November 18, 2011 Share #4 Posted November 18, 2011 1.8 is a removable front ring which is just screwed onto the body. It is not attached to the 1.9 focus ring. The latter is not screwable, it just turns freely in both clockwise and anticlockwise directions for manual focus purpose. Then loosening of the 1.8 ring suggests that it is not tightened enough onto the body or that the threads of the ring or the body are damaged i'm afraid. ho_co Posted November 18, 2011 Share #5 Posted November 18, 2011 Yeah, if you can't tighten 1.8 down, it does sound as if there's a problem. Does the lens wobble? But I'm still not sure we're talking about the same thing. 1.8 isn't an assembly, but an aluminum ring that just screws on. I don't know how 1.8's holding thread is fastened to the body. But 1.8 should screw into place snugly. 1.9 is the focusing ring, which surrounds the tube on which 1.8 is mounted. Here's the Digilux 1 with 1.8 unscrewed:
Eltonn Posted November 18, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted November 18, 2011 Thank you both, very much. I completely unscrewed 1.8 and then screwed it back down tightly. That portion works perfectly. However, the retaining barrel, that 1.9 surrounds, is still loose. On a recent trip, I noticed about a 1/4 inch gap between the camera body and that assembly, it appeared to be falling off the camera. Regarding the lens barrel, there is a small amount of play ... perhaps 1/16 of an inch, at most. Right now, the entire assembly (combined 1.8 and 1.9) is loose but not ready to fall off. Not certain how long that will last.
ho_co Posted November 19, 2011 Share #7 Posted November 19, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Oops! It does sound like something strange. It's probably not major, but it will likely take nearly a full disassembly of the camera to correct it. I'd send it to Leica for evaluation whenever I could afford to be without it. Good luck! And do keep us posted.
Eltonn Posted November 19, 2011 Author Share #8 Posted November 19, 2011 Thanks for the help. Are there any reputable Leica repair locations you'd recommend. I had a problem with my Minilux a few years ago and sent it all the way back to Germany. I'd prefer not to do that unless necessary. earleygallery Posted November 19, 2011 Share #9 Posted November 19, 2011 The camera was made by Panasonic so they would be a better bet for repair. You're more likely to have a local store/service centre too, although it's probably a simple job of tightening some screw inside, which any camera repair man can fix. The lens and sensor assembly is one unit. You could even stick or tape it if you don't care about appearance. I'd be tempted to - carefully - try taking it apart myself.
