Stateowned Posted November 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted November 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey guys, i came across a big issue and im not sure what to do with it.. it seems my camera is producing 1 single vertical stripe midframe also it seems to get worse as you increase the iso. what to do about it, the first picture is iso 160, where in lightroom 100% it is visible and the bottom one is 2500 iso, it also shows on 640 but not as bad as it does on 2500 like you can see.. does any one have any advice for me? or experiance with reparations or problems like this? jaapv Posted November 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted November 14, 2011 yes- red line. Off to Solms for pixel mapping. It happens to sensors in general. http://euler.ecs.umass.edu/research/cam-ckk-dft07.pdf Our results have clearly shown that defect development in cameras is so common as to be present in almost every camera that has been in the field for a significant period of time. Stateowned Posted November 14, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted November 14, 2011 any idea how much that costs without warranty? PS. i checked my exif for the shutter count and it only just passed 5k.
jaapv Posted November 14, 2011 Share #4 Posted November 14, 2011 Not really - I have seen prices ranging from zero to high - it depends , I guess whether then sensor can be mapped or must be replaced ( it must be replaced once the percentage of mapped-out pixels becomes too high) The only thing to do is to send it in.. eudemian Posted November 15, 2011 Share #6 Posted November 15, 2011 I sold an M8 recently and the buyer said it had a red stripe, cost to me was £150 I presume this was just for remapping not a new sensor. Still not convinced the problem was real as I was only shown jpg at very high iso, it never showed in any of my dngs. Ho hum:(
menos I M6 Posted November 16, 2011 Share #7 Posted November 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I sold an M8 recently and the buyer said it had a red stripe, cost to me was £150 I presume this was just for remapping not a new sensor. Still not convinced the problem was real as I was only shown jpg at very high iso, it never showed in any of my dngs. Ho hum:( If the issue is visible at high ISO, the issue is there at lower ISO speeds as well. If the issue is visible as a red line, shot at high ISO with lens cap on in AE, the sensor shows a defect and must go to Solms. Unfortunately it is as simple as that. Qualified sensors do not show this red line. One can shoot a lens cap photo @ ISO2500 and push further beyond ISO 25600 without getting any red line with a qualified sensor in a M8/9. Potential buyers must be aware of that issue and check cameras accordingly before buying (always one of the things, I check, when buying digital cameras - new or second hand BEFORE signing a contract). jaapv Posted November 16, 2011 Share #9 Posted November 16, 2011 When I sold an M8 I did an extensive test for red line and sent the prospective buyer the DNGs. I don't like comebacks.
eudemian Posted November 16, 2011 Share #10 Posted November 16, 2011 So did I jaapv, I sent DNGs at iso 1250 taken a week before I sold which were clear of the problem albeit a bit noisy. I have a theory that jpegs may reveal a problem in certain processors but dngs do not because they get fixed in lightroom automatically, is this possible? Anyway, this is water under the bridge, the item is "fixed" and I am enjoying the M9.
Stateowned Posted November 17, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted November 17, 2011 i've sent my camera to the appointed dutch leica repair centre.. they told me they will fix it. if they cannot or think they can't fix it good enough for leica standards they will send it trough to solms.. jaapv Posted November 18, 2011 Share #12 Posted November 18, 2011 They will send it on for sure - the Dutch repair facility is limited - to put it mildly. I always deal directly with Solms.
Stateowned Posted December 13, 2011 Author Share #13 Posted December 13, 2011 I received the price of the repair costs and they "only" are €240... so im quite pleased asides that such an expensive camera broke after +- 5000-5500 clicks.. a Nikon D3s/x or canon 1d series should atleast get to 300k without a problem. jippiejee Posted December 13, 2011 Share #14 Posted December 13, 2011 I have a theory that jpegs may reveal a problem in certain processors but dngs do not because they get fixed in lightroom automatically, is this possible? I noticed two green dots in my M8 dng's, but after entering the develop mode in Lightroom they disappeared auto-magically. Apparently Lightroom fixes pixel defects... how sweet. Guest Ming Rider Posted December 13, 2011 Share #15 Posted December 13, 2011 Thanks for sharing your wisdoms and experiences with the community Jaav:-D Yep. Jaap's the Man (sorry forgot my PC, I meant Jaap's the Person, no particular race, colour, creed, nationality, size (both height & width), language and culinary or sexual preferences implied). A homage to Jeremy Clarkson, the last true Brit' on TV (or is that non PC as well?)

stoxa Posted December 14, 2011 Share #17 Posted December 14, 2011 I have a theory that jpegs may reveal a problem in certain processors but dngs do not because they get fixed in lightroom automatically, is this possible? I wish it was, I've just got the vertical red line as posted, shows in my m8.2 dngs in LR (approx 120000 clicks), bit disappointing as just out of warranty. Oh well, email to solms now. ann
Paulus Posted September 25, 2012 Share #18 Posted September 25, 2012 yes- red line. Off to Solms for pixel mapping. It happens to sensors in general. http://euler.ecs.umass.edu/research/cam-ckk-dft07.pdf Jaap, My red line appeared today ( with a SD sandisk ultra 2 gb ) sadly because the camera came from Solms just a month or so ago where they did some adjusting for a 90 apo and looking at the sensor and testing. I put in another SD (sandisk ultra 16 GB ) card and then the red line became a black line. Do you have experience with this?

After 3 years and almost 1000 clicks the red line showed up with my M8. Could it be that the M8 CCD is sensitive to that problem. I still have a D-Lux 2 thats older but no red line issue.
