dhsimmonds Posted September 18, 2012 Share #21 Posted September 18, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) It remains to be seen how the new Leica M with both RF and an accessory EVF work for using R lenses but the idea is sound. It took Epson to prove to the world that it is possible to make a digital rangefinder with the old RD1 and now Fuji to prove that an optical and electronic viewfinder (courtesy of Olympus) can be used with traditional reflex glass such as macro lenses, telyt lenses etc. Of course it took Leica to refine both! The naming of the new camera is hardly original either. The Leica M, MR might have been a bit more descriptive of it's use? It looks a really nice camera on paper though, so what's in a name. A 24 Mpx Cmos sensor came as no surprise but it's Belgian source did. It does solve the dilemna of sourcing sensors from Kodak though.

adan Posted September 18, 2012 Share #22 Posted September 18, 2012 It does solve the dilemna of sourcing sensors from Kodak though. Hmm - you mean those sensors still used in the new M-E? That are made by TrueSense (now independent of Kodak)?
dhsimmonds Posted September 20, 2012 Share #23 Posted September 20, 2012 For the first time since the demise of the DMR and R line, I am getting interested in the new Leica M with R adaptor and viewfinder. Will this mean a new line of R lens introductions I wonder? I wish I could buy back my R lenses now!
mjh Posted September 21, 2012 Share #24 Posted September 21, 2012 It does solve the dilemna of sourcing sensors from Kodak though. There is no ‘dilemma’ – how many times does that have to be explained? The CCDs in the M9, M Monochrom and now the M-E are still manufactured by Truesense Imaging (which used to be a Kodak division). The CCD of the new S is manufactured by Truesense Imaging as well.

Probably it can be the first time in which a certain set of old lenses increases its value after having lost it few years before...

Quite likely I would think.

dhsimmonds Posted September 22, 2012 Share #31 Posted September 22, 2012 In fact the 24 mpx sensors for the new M are made by Belgian company CMOSIS founded in 2007. As their name implies the sensors are CMOS unlike the CCD sensors made by Kodak. I have been unable to find any connection between CMOSIS and Truesense. The shareholders of CMOSIS are the founding directors of CMOSIS and financial investment companies.
-ph- Posted September 22, 2012 Share #32 Posted September 22, 2012 I have read somewhere that some of the CMOSIS engineers where also part of the Fill Factory team making the first full frame cmos sensor for Kodak over 10 years ago. On the one side, those Kodak cameras did not perform very well, on the other side, they did it before any of the current "big" manufacturers. So those guys may be extremely experienced at what they are doing... Peter

shard Posted September 22, 2012 Share #34 Posted September 22, 2012 I really like the fact that Leica went with a smaller sensor maker for the new M. It will allow them to work closely with the sensor maker to create a customized one that suits them. Very much like what they did with Kodak for the CCD sensor in the M9 and now M-E.
