peter_n Posted November 7, 2011 Share #21 Â Posted November 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) What's wrong with the original? On my sample of this particular lens, it just doesn't work properly. It slides out, slides in, slides out... Basically it's just useless. The only Leica lens I have with a decent slide hood is the 75/2. When you slide it in there's a detent on the barrel that a notch on the inside of the hood goes in. When you pull it out you turn it and it locks. And it stays locked. Â Clearly things like lens caps and hoods are beneath the dignity of the great engineers they have at Leica, because they're mostly very poorly designed. mobeyone Posted November 20, 2011 Author Share #22 Â Posted November 20, 2011 Well, I bought a number of hoods and have settled on a silver vented one, kind of looks ok but I know its on and it saves me messing around when using the camera.. majority of the time I was forgetting to pull the hood out. Â Peter, Â The 50mm ASPH has the same hood as the 75/2, i.e., pull out, turn, lock. What you describe is more like the previous pre-ASPH version (E46). I would agree with you, the hood on the pre-ASPH is useless. However, the locking ability of the ASPH hood makes the use of an external one redundant in my opinion. Appreciate any feedback I have a black one like this from Heavystar that i screw onto the IR-cut filter. It is not as efficient as my Schneider (now B+W # 950) but blocks the viewfinder less than the latter. Does not cause vignetting on the M8. On the M9 i don't know. Redundant but more efficient by far IMHO. As well as that of the pre-asph 50/1.4, the built-in hood of the 50/1.4 asph is totally useless with filter on. Without filter it may protect from a couple of rain drops perhaps...
Shade Posted November 20, 2011 Share #26 Â Posted November 20, 2011 I just dont see a point adding an external hood if you already have a built in hood, but hey thats juste probably..
lct Posted November 20, 2011 Share #27 Â Posted November 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) There are built-in hoods and built-in hoods. Some are efficient, others are not. In defence to the ridiculous ones of Summiluxes (and Summicron) 50, it is fair to say that they help compactness of the lenses though and they don't get in the way of more serious hoods if need be. Leica used do make telescopic built-in hoods for R lenses BTW. I wonder if they would add significant bulk to their M counterparts.
rafael_macia Posted November 20, 2011 Share #28 Â Posted November 20, 2011 With the multi coating on most modern lenses, I find most hoods to be not really necessary. That's just me.

smkoush Posted November 22, 2011 Share #30 Â Posted November 22, 2011 Yes Savvas, I'm talking about the E46 pre-ASPH 50. There's a picture of it up there in post #13. Â Ooops, sorry Peter, I thought you were referring to the ASPH version. I agree with you, the pre-ASPH hood is pretty much useless. I used to own the same exact lens as you have (black paint), and I used a Heavystar hood with it. Fine lens in many aspects, but its sliding hood is not its forte! artspraken Posted November 22, 2011 Share #31  Posted November 22, 2011 Agree. Sliding hoods are annoying and get in the way. I prefer external hoods which you can choose to do without and work with a smaller package   Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
