opho.to Posted October 17, 2011 Share #1 Â Posted October 17, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, Â I've just ordered something from Dale Photographic, and they've just sent me this: Â "Thanks for your order. As we are unable to check your credit card address from the UK please can you fax/email me a copy of a bill for your home address. This can be a phone / utility bill. This is so we can check that your credit card address matches your delivery address. Â We also need your date of birth, full address and driving licence number." Â Date of birth? Driving license? Is this legimtimate for a money/goods transaction,or some sort of identity theft scam? Â My card is a normal UK debit card (VISA), and I've never been asked for this before. Â Has anyone got any experience of Dale Photographic? Should I continue with my order? Â Thanks!
Advertisement Posted October 17, 2011 Posted October 17, 2011 Hi opho.to, Take a look here Dale Photographic - dodgy?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
wattsy Posted October 17, 2011 Share #2 Â Posted October 17, 2011 Dale Photographic in Leeds have been around for years. I doubt that there is anything weird going on.
opho.to Posted October 17, 2011 Author Share #3 Â Posted October 17, 2011 No, Leeds in the UK.
bill Posted October 17, 2011 Share #4 Â Posted October 17, 2011 Phone them? Â Regards, Â Bill
opho.to Posted October 17, 2011 Author Share #5 Â Posted October 17, 2011 I've phoned them, so I know they have a phone line, and some sort of physical location. But I've had my card cloned at a Hilton, so that doesn't mean much! Â Given all the stuff they have on their website, it seems too well researched to be a scam. Â The fact that nobody here seems to have actually dealt with them, or had a different dealer make similar demands, is more concerning.

I'd give people more time to respond if I were you. Â Sorry, I wasn't very clear - I meant I didn't find much via a Google search. Â (Admittedly, I didn't find anything to suggest they were dodgy, either.)
andybarton Posted October 17, 2011 Share #8 Â Posted October 17, 2011 I have bought stuff from Dale in Leeds. They have a shop (a real one) not far from The Headrow. They sell a lot of Hasselblad and Nikon stuff. Â If your VISA card is on a UK bank, they should have no problem at all with it. Â Why not phone them and ask them why they need all this information from a UK resident with a UK VISA card.
lct Posted October 17, 2011 Share #9 Â Posted October 17, 2011 I can understand this if your name and/or delivery address are not the same as those of your credit card. Otherwise i would go and buy elsewhere as there is no risk for them to wait for your money before shipping. Now it can't hurt to call them as suggested by Andy. Peter H Posted October 17, 2011 Share #10 Â Posted October 17, 2011 I've been to Dale's in Leeds. Not bought anything of note there, but they were definitely a real shop! Â I'd phone them as Bill suggests. I can't understand why they'd need that sort of detail from you.
earleygallery Posted October 17, 2011 Share #11 Â Posted October 17, 2011 What if you don't drive? Â Best to phone them as already suggested. Are you not in the UK then?
pgk Posted October 17, 2011 Share #12 Â Posted October 17, 2011 I've bought off Dale too. They've been going for years. If you are outside the UK they may well be wary (as many dealers are) and clearly require further proof of identity. If you feel that this is too invasive then buy elsewhere but having heard a varirty of stories from dealers about scams and the difficulty of recouping money even when a scam has been exposed I am hardly surprised that some dealers are (even over) cautious. thighslapper Posted October 17, 2011 Share #13 Â Posted October 17, 2011 If you are making a high value mail order purchase it's quite reasonable for a retailer to ensure they are dealing with the real card owner and delivering to the card holders address. Â I'd be reassured rather than pi**ed off. Â There was a thread a couple of weeks ago from a UK dealer that was defrauded out of an M9 due to the buyer using a dodgy card...... Popeye69 Posted October 17, 2011 Share #14 Â Posted October 17, 2011 I live in Dubai and bought my M9 and 35mm Summarit from them using Bank Transfer rather than Credit Card. I found them to be excellent, professional and secure - not dodgy at all. I have found most UK companies wary of accepting credit cards from foreign countries. aesop Posted October 17, 2011 Share #15 Â Posted October 17, 2011 ...I have shopped with Dale Photographic several times and can only describe the request as "highly irregular". There must be a legitimate reason for the request - as suggested, call them up for a little chin-wag prior to your next step.
opho.to Posted October 17, 2011 Author Share #16 Â Posted October 17, 2011 Thanks all! I've been reassured by other's previous dealing with Dale, and so I gave them a call. Â They said my card address did not match the address I gave when I ordered online - which is odd, because it normally does, and I definitely gave the correct address. Not quite sure what they saw as the card address, but they seemed happy after I gave them my driving license number, as they could look up the address on that using my d.o.b. (So I now know who to contact if I suddenly get a bunch of speeding tickets in Yorkshire! ) Â I'm in the UK, and have never needed to do this before, even for pricier purchases, which is what made me wary. Â Anyway, I thought it was all good, but I just got an email from them saying 'call us before 4.55'. I got it at 5.15, so it'll have to wait until tomorrow to see what's up now. Â Thanks again, everyone.

opho.to Posted October 17, 2011 Author Share #18 Â Posted October 17, 2011 Oh dear. Spending your own money shouldn't be this difficult should it? Â Â I know it sounds like I'm being silly, but I don't mind the time or effort it's taking. What's a day or two in the scheme of things. It's more that I'm always really careful about keeping my private details, well, private, so this goes against the grain.
lct Posted October 17, 2011 Share #19 Â Posted October 17, 2011 Yes that's what i suspected above. The dealer may be held responsible by the credit card holder if he ships to another name and/or address as those of the latter.
microview Posted October 17, 2011 Share #20 Â Posted October 17, 2011 Zeiss ZM I bought from them recently, online, was in my hands in under 24 hours (London) from the transaction time. Excellent service.
