bpalme Posted October 11, 2011 Share #43 Â Posted October 11, 2011 No no no no no... Only buy one of these if you want to be choked with it or worse, dragged along behind a fleeing thief on a moped... Â Regards, Â Bill If it buys me a couple of seconds to turn and get my hands on the thief then I'm ok with that.
wda Posted October 11, 2011 Share #44  Posted October 11, 2011 My wife got mugged in Brussels while she stopped in front of a red traffic light. Some kid smashed the side window of the car (the doors were locked) and took her handbag from the passenger seat. Everything was gone! Money, credit cards, bank cards, passport, mobile phone ... We've been back since and nothing happened  Juergen.  This was an extremely common practice in Naples in the 1980s. Possibly still is. The remedy: NEVER leave any seemingly valuable possession within sight of anyone outside your car. Scouts identify the victims in advance.

larsv Posted October 11, 2011 Share #49 Â Posted October 11, 2011 I think the economic downturn causes many inconveniences. This is one of them. Over the past twenty odd years I have traveled extensively to many places on all continents. I observed two situations requiring increased attention, wherever I went: Tourist areas (including airports/train stations) and poor areas adjacent to wealthier ones. Â So far, knock on wood, I have not been robbed or mugged. With the exception of my own country, where they have cleaned out my home on three occasions.... So, I'd rather be traveling and take my chances.

I wouldn't think a thief would report you to the police for illegally using pepper spray.  Juergen

The moment you realize that you are being robbed, you sacrifice the bill to protect both yourself and others far greater values, such as a Leica camera.  Most street thieves will be pleased with the quick $ 20. therbert Posted October 12, 2011 Share #53  Posted October 12, 2011 well, times changed a little bit, of course it's still possible to take photos there in the night, but sometimes i feel more or less uncomfortable.  And yes, it is defintely my favorite city too.  Yogi  P.S Here's another link for Ingrid to search for her M7: eBay anuncios: Anuncios Gratis, Segunda mano, Clasificados  I'm going to be in Barcelona at the beginning of December - first visit and very much looking forward to it. I've never lost anything but my wife did have her passport taken in Rome and on another trip to Rome with my son, I found someone's hand in my pocket as I was boarding a train (didn't get anything).  Tom

I wouldn't think a thief would report you to the police for illegally using pepper spray.  Juergen  Been there actually when i was in high school. He didn't get anything when he saw me reach for 'something'.  Maybe a good advice would be to always have some money, let's say a $ 20 bill, easily accessible. The moment you realize that you are being robbed, you sacrifice the bill to protect both yourself and others far greater values, such as a Leica camera.  Most street thieves will be pleased with the quick $ 20.  I'm not a 'stand there and HOPE he won't hurt me' kind of guy. That attitude (letting them do what they want) got my pregnant cousin stabbed twice and a couple month in the hospital. They only wanted her phone/purse, but that didn't stop them from stabbing her while she was obeying them and giving them her stuff.  I have other stories like that... photography colleague walking home, stab in the leg and hit on the back of the head. They wanted his bag (school bag type that he kept his laptop in). He never resisted or did anything.  Both event were in separate countries, which shows dirt bags like those are everywhere.  #1 Stay Alert #2 Observe Situation #3 Act Upon Observation  I would GLADLY give my Leica/valuables if it means my safety, and especially the safety of my loved one's. But one never knows... And lately they are too many stories of simple roberies turning south because the thieves are morons.
wizard Posted October 12, 2011 Share #55 Â Posted October 12, 2011 ... I took the M8 with me for a night trip around Raval and had no problems whatsoever. It hung over my shoulder in a Leicatime leather halfcase. No interest was shown in me or my camera, whatsoever. Â Well, the M9 was on the market by then, wasn't it? So who would steal an old digital camera... . Btw, my wife was mugged in Barcelona last year, too. No, not on the open road, but in a Starbucks. At the time I still felt lucky, as he didn't take my bag containing my camera and Leica lenses (it wasn't a camera bag, just a regular one). plasticman Posted October 13, 2011 Share #56 Â Posted October 13, 2011 Btw, my wife was mugged in Barcelona last year, too. No, not on the open road, but in a Starbucks. At the time I still felt lucky, as he didn't take my bag containing my camera and Leica lenses (it wasn't a camera bag, just a regular one). Â Andy - while not meaning to belittle the distress of what your wife went through, I have to say I'm surprised to read that she was mugged inside a Starbucks? Mugged means robbed with violence or the real threat of violence, and I simply can't imagine that scenario in any of the locations where the Starbucks are located in Barcelona. Of course, if this is what happened then I'm really sorry to hear it. Â Anyway, I'm not here to defend the town - I'll leave that to their tourist board - it's just a place I've been visiting regularly the last ten years, and the only problem I've encountered the entire time was a fellow hotel guest once who'd placed her purse in the outermost pocket of her rucksack, which she'd then cluelessly carried on her back before queuing for the Sagrada Familia at the height of the tourist season. Â Still, as someone else has said, things have changed (in the world) the last couple years, and I fear that we're all entering another harsher era, where many more locations around the globe will be less safe - particularly for visitors and outsiders. Â Having said that, the talk in the thread of carrying knives to defend oneself strikes me as something of an infantile Charles Bronson fantasy, and I'd assume that the most likely victim would be the same person carrying the blade in 'self-defense'. earleygallery Posted October 13, 2011 Share #58 Â Posted October 13, 2011 So, just to re-cap, never visit Spain or Italy, but if one ignores that advice one should ensure that they carry (along with their Leica of course!) a knife, a taser, a gun and some pepper spray or similar. pico Posted October 15, 2011 Share #59 Â Posted October 15, 2011 I kinda like the fantasy retribution my old National Geographic photographer once said, "I'd like to keep one Leica loose, easy to steal. wilfredo Posted October 15, 2011 Share #60 Â Posted October 15, 2011 I'm really sorry to hear of this incident. 25% unemployment for people under 30 is a sign of really bad times.
