I am quit happy with:

Elmarit-M 1:2,8/28 mm ASPH

Summilux-M 1:1,4/50mm ASPH

Macro-Elmar-M 1:4/90

In addition I use a Super-Elmar-M 1:3,8/18 ASPH, esp. for landscape and for taking pictures in towns, where there is not enough room, to use the other lenses. The finder fot this lens is allways on my camera.

why would you have 1.0 and .95?

think i am sticking with 24/50/75

I think I didn't express myself clearly. I was asking whether jco611 had a 0.95 or 1.0 Noctilux, and why he would take it out with the Summilux.

Why not? :D

Seriously though, I think I didn't express myself clearly.

The classic trio for M is 35/50/90 but I also like something wider like a 24.

+1. That's exactly my combo. I usually go out on a daily basis with 35+50 but take all four of them if I go travelling and have no clear ideas about what will I'll find/do.

Cheers,

Bruno

A couple of thoughts:

1. If finances permit, never sell a lens. You'll have to pay more to get it back in the future.

The comments on wider than 24mm really are queries on what do you shoot. Do you ever see a need for telephoto, or alternately ever see a need for wide angle?

2. General range kits: 35/75, 35/90, or 28/90 (oh, did you say 3 lenses? See comment 1 above.)

As you have the M3, and made no comment on preference of wide or telephoto, you may wish to consider the 50/90 setup. 135 is usable, but a little tricky. The good news is that you can pick up the 90 and 135 as some of the better values in Leica lenses.

When buying lenses, definitely insist on the most perfect condition lens that you can afford. Definitely do not accept anything with issues with the glass or any signs of being dropped. Even following these rules, the 90/2.8 I bought from e-bay needed an extra $500 in work when I sent it in for 6-bit coding for the M8.

Another question - do you prioritize sharpness or speed? If sharpness is top priority, the more modern, aspherical (or asph) lens designs will make you happier. On the other hand, for about the same monies, generally speaking, that you would pay for an f/2 asph lens, you could have an older non-asph f.1,4 lens. These perform acceptably in the center of the frame, but be sure to use your lens hood for best performance (good advice for all lenses, by the way).

Do a google search for "llcforweb.pdf" and read Putt's text summary of most Leica lenses released up through the 1990's. It's some free reading, and if you enjoy the author, you can (pre?) order his new compendium, complete with figures and typos.

Don't forget rentals and borrowing lenses if you are still undecided.

So, care to share a little more about what you wish to shoot?

Eric

Hi Stephen,

For some years, and with a number of different systems, I have settled on a 3 lens kit for almost all travel, and just wandering to and from work. Like MarkP, I currently, I favour:

- 50 Lux ASPH

- 28 Cron ASPH

- 21 Lux ASPH

When I get a Noct 0.95 I will probably substitute that for the 50 Lux. I am also on a waiting list for the 35 Lux ASPH, which will qualify my choices further.

I do take a 2 lens kit with my from time to time (one lens in my pocket), and that will either be:

- 50 Lux

- 28 Cron

or

- 35 Cron ASPH (or the Lux, when I get it)

- 75 Cron AA

I find these combinations the easiest to visualise, and they provide the most flexibility. I tend not to think too much in terms of character of the lenses (I don't have those pretentions, and besides, all my lenses are aspherical, so many would say they are crisp, clinical and lack character - I love them). I do, however, think in terms of focal length and depth of field as being critical aspects of composition. I tend not to rely on the flaws in my equipment or post processing to give character or appeal that the original compositions lacked.

Cheers

John

That really is a soul-less approach that misses the whole point of variances in lens design - it sounds like the rendition of a Mandler-era lens would be wasted on you. It's a bit like regarding a track on an iPod as superior to an LP because it is digitally precise. Stick to the ASPHs and the clinical purity by all means but don't sneer disparagingly at those who understand ad appreciate the value of character and personality over grey, uniform, regimented "perfection".

Regards,

Bill

are you sure you are reading johns post correct.?

i read it as in.

some other people may think the ASPH are clinical, but that he thinks differently about them.
