Guest boruwatanabe Posted September 25, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 25, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi Guys, I'm new to this forum and although I spent few hours searching around relevant topics I couldn't make up my mind yet... so please convince me NOT to buy an M8. Here is the thing, I've used SLR / DSLR all my life, I mainly do street photography (not pro, just for fun) and recently I've decided to sell all my gear and get an X100. Best choice I've ever made (photography wise)... I love the X100 under every aspect and quirk... but it's slowly becoming "small" especially the crappy MF and no lenses. So I am thinking... let's get a M8, Leica has always been my dream but I cannot justify (from a money / usage perspective) a M9 and here comes my problem: 1) M8 is quite an old camera. 2) The image quality / iso performance are substantially crappier than my X100. Will I end up buying a used camera, spend 1.5gbp + a lens (was thinking of a 28 Ultron F2 or a 50mm Nokton 1.1) that will most likely perform worse than my X100. I love the Leica (idea) <- but I'm deeply worried i will regret it... So... please stop me now!!! Thank you all!

andybarton Posted September 25, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 25, 2011 Who says the quality is crappier than your Fuji? If that's what you think, don't waste your money.
Guest boruwatanabe Posted September 25, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 25, 2011 Who says the quality is crappier than your Fuji? If that's what you think, don't waste your money. mmm... 1) it's an old sensor (2007) 2) the iso performance is definitely way crappier 3) the x100 sensor / lens / built are tight together and kind of fine tuned Of course I'm not talking about an m8 with a noctilux... I'm talking about an m8 with a 28 Ultron -> Do you think I'm wrong? Can you please give me you reasons for thinking so? thank you
andybarton Posted September 25, 2011 Share #4 Posted September 25, 2011 Have you looked at prints, or just screen shots, from the M8? Forget the age of the sensor -look at the results from people who know how to use the camera
Guest boruwatanabe Posted September 25, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 25, 2011 Have you looked at prints, or just screen shots, from the M8? Forget the age of the sensor -look at the results from people who know how to use the camera Screen shots only, to be honest I haven't printed anything in ages... to be honest the thing that scary me the most is the ISO performance, from what I've seen around more than 640 and it will start looking crappy... the X100 goes up to 6400 easily and the picture is still usable. So you will definitely think I won't regret it... or even worse... I would have the need to get an M9 after 1 month?

andybarton Posted September 25, 2011 Share #12 Posted September 25, 2011 I have used Macs since 1990. I have used Leicas since 2002. If you want to shoot at ISO 6400, a Leica isn't for you

Guest boruwatanabe Posted September 25, 2011 Share #15 Posted September 25, 2011 I have used Macs since 1990. I have used Leicas since 2002. If you want to shoot at ISO 6400, a Leica isn't for you I am not saying I want to shot a 6400 but if I shoot at 1250 and it looks like a freaking nokia mobile phone from the year 2000 then fuck yeah... Leica shouldn't be for you either guys... you are saying you would limit yourself to shooting at a max of iso 640 just because you can get a stupid red dot with Leica written on it -> so when you take it out of your bag you feel cool? and on top of that you would rather pay 1.5k body only for a 4 years old camera out of warranty??? then guys... there is definitely something I am missing here... and I opened up this post to find out... can you please help me understand? earleygallery Posted September 25, 2011 Share #16 Posted September 25, 2011 I suspected you were a troll from your first post. If you think the Leica is so crappy why are you even asking the question, apart from trolling?
gfspencer Posted September 25, 2011 Share #17 Posted September 25, 2011 boruwatanabeI, we Leica users think as much about our lenses as we think about our camera. I have an M8 because it is a digital camera that will let me easily use the Leica lenses that I already owned. I suspect many of us were using Leica film cameras when digital got popular and we wanted to keep using our Leica lenses on a Leica digital camera. The M8 met that need. So if I didn't already own four Leica lenses I probably wouldn't run out and buy an M8. Buying the M8 is only 1/2 of what you need to consider. You are going to have to buy some lenses too. Archiver Posted September 25, 2011 Share #19 Posted September 25, 2011 There is nothing to understand. As a DSLR and X100 user you obviously enjoy the benefits of working with these cameras, benefits that the M8 lacks. If you think that the M8 is so lacking, then why is it your dream to own a Leica? Perhaps it's not us who want to 'look cool'. The only thing you are missing is the realization that your current cameras suit you much more, and that your dream of owning a Leica is a vain and fanciful wish. If you really want a Leica, buy a D-Lux 5. You'll get a brand new camera with warranty, you won't spend anywhere near the cost of used M8, and you'll have the cool-making red dot that you so obviously crave. Guest boruwatanabe Posted September 25, 2011 Share #20 Posted September 25, 2011 I suspected you were a troll from your first post. If you think the Leica is so crappy why are you even asking the question, apart from trolling? I don't think Leica is crap... if I could justify an M9 + a Noctilux for the use I would do of it... I would by it tomorrow... the problem is I can't... the only thing I can justify is a used M8... and pardon me for being realistic but I still think what I wrote above is being realistic... not fan boy... realistic! if we were talking about film cameras then i would agree with you... 3 year 5 year... 10 years... doesn't matter... but a 4 years old digital camera???
