philipus Posted September 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 12, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am looking for a European dealer from which to order sleeves for storing negatives. There seem to be lots in the US but I haven't found any that deliver to Europe (plus I'd like to avoid dealing with the customs, if possible). The "slide in" type is common, but I've also heard that there's a "fold lock" version which may prevent scratching the neg while inserting or removing it. Any suggestions gratefully received. Cheers and thanks in advance Philip

topoxforddoc Posted September 12, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 12, 2011 Philip, I use the Clearfile 14B sleeves. These are archival and transparent (so you can contact print with them). they are in stock at Firstcall in the UK, but you may find them in stock in Europe. 250swb Posted September 13, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 13, 2011 I get mine from here, but lots of places sell neg sheets, these are translucent (not clear) Kenro 35mm Negative Film Ringbinder Storage Pages x25 I wouldn't go for the clear sheets if I were you (unless you habitually print 10"x12" contact sheets). They are a real pain to get negatives into and grab the neg strip as you slide it in (although it helps if you have curly negatives) and serve no purpose other than to slow any job down. andybarton Posted September 13, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 13, 2011 Agree with Steve. The ones with the translucent papery sheet are far easier to use.

philipus Posted September 13, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted September 13, 2011 Thank you very much for all these suggestions. Are "translucent" sleeves clear enough to be able to see/identify the photo if it is a colour or b/w neg, for instance by holding up against a window? Oddly most online shops seem not to include pictures of the products but only have drawings to show the layout of the sleeves. Cheers and thanks again Philip
andybarton Posted September 13, 2011 Share #10 Posted September 13, 2011 Yes. They are clear on one side, translucent on the other.. Hold them up to the window and it's like having a light box behind the negs, or slides.
mono Posted September 13, 2011 Share #11 Posted September 13, 2011 I have those from Monochrom, they are clear on both sides, you can easily make contact prints without ever touching the negatives and its a complete system with storing boxes etc. The boxes are made to archival standards and so are the sleeves (Mylar D). I use this system for several years now, its fine and highly recommandable!
250swb Posted September 13, 2011 Share #12 Posted September 13, 2011 Thank you very much for all these suggestions. Are "translucent" sleeves clear enough to be able to see/identify the photo if it is a colour or b/w neg, for instance by holding up against a window? Cheers and thanks again Philip Yes clear enough to identify any negative. Not clear enough to contact print from, but there is little point even thinking about that unless you have a big sheet of paper in a wet darkroom, or a massive flatbed scanner. Otherwise you still need to take the negative strips out of the sheet to either contact print then in a conventional Paterson frame (wet darkroom), or load them into a multi strip holder for a scanner like an Epson V700, or indeed feed them individually into a dedicated film scanner. Nobody has ever learned the truth about a negative by looking at it through a clear file even though it offers the best view. But the clear sheets are a real pain if you are scanning or wanting to put your negative strips into a holder or frame. Enough trouble to make you despair of a quick and easy workflow. They really are infuriating putting your neg strip into the sheet without static electricity or whatever it is causing them to grab and buckle. rulnacco Posted October 1, 2011 Share #13 Posted October 1, 2011 I use the ClearFile sheets because I shoot mostly black & white, and they're good for contact printing. I get them in the UK from here: Javerette Sleeving / Digital Storage / Photographic Storage / Clearfile Pages / Clear Face Bags / Film Fronted Bags / Archival Storage / Hanging Files & Bars / Photographic Archival Storage Good prices, fast delivery and very friendly service. christer Posted October 1, 2011 Share #14 Posted October 1, 2011 Something like this? Silverprint - Store - Browse Products - I've been through half a dozen top grade brands and find the ones from PrintFiles (see above) the best. Pleasant handling, easy to load film into, white area for writing film details on so that these can be read without having to hold the sleeve agains the light. Philipus: Even if the product pictures are excellent, they don't tell the whole story. You have to handle them to be able to judge what suits _you_ best. Bill Allsopp Posted November 26, 2011 Share #16 Posted November 26, 2011 Secol. I have negatives and transparencies in them from 30 years ago and they are still 100%. Must get them out and scan them one day.
fotohuis Posted November 27, 2011 Share #17 Posted November 27, 2011 All according: ANSI IT9.16/DIN ISO 10214 Pergamyn (paper type) Clear Acetate or Polypropylene (you can make a contact print incl. the sleeve). And after approx. 50 years your CN (and slides) will have a problem too. B&W you can store over a longer time ( Except chromogenic B&W films). Kodachrome too.
