William C Posted September 8, 2011 Share #1 Posted September 8, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just bought an M8 and it is in the mail I am wondering if the SD cards that I have are compatible with the M8. SanDisk 16GB Extreme Pro SDHC-UHS-I Memory Card Kit B&H Photo I read about the issues with M9 and I wonder if I will have problems with mine?
Advertisement Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Hi William C, Take a look here M8 SD card compatibility. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted September 8, 2011 Share #2 Posted September 8, 2011 Congratulations on the M8! The card should work fine for the M8, though it's faster than the camera needs. Whatever the problem with the M9, it hasn't been so apparent with the M8. My suggestion is to use the cards you've got, and keep an eye out for signs of misbehavior. If that happens, you might consider dropping back to a Class 4 SDHC card. But in all likelihood, your cards will work fine. Good luck, and keep us posted on how the cards work out. brianv Posted September 8, 2011 Share #3 Posted September 8, 2011 I would stay away from the Sandisk UHS-1 cards. I used mine in the M8, could read the card. However- once formatted in the computer the card failed with the computer, M8, olympus EP-2, and Ricoh CX-1. I returned it to Sandisk 3 weeks ago, and have not received a replacement. I suspect they have issues and are trying to get things corrected. Three weeks is ridiculous to replace a memory card.
William C Posted September 8, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted September 8, 2011 Seems like it is best to format the card in the camera and not on the computer. A lot of the issues arises after the card has been formated in the computer. This is only based on reading not by experience. I am getting my M8 next week. Holybasil Posted September 8, 2011 Share #5 Posted September 8, 2011 yeah, I've been using the card for ... 5 months now. Had no issues. I format in camera though. But it won't really provide any benefit, the limiting factor is the camera's buffer and write speed, not the card's write speed.
lct Posted September 8, 2011 Share #6 Posted September 8, 2011 Formatting by computers may be necessary for salvage of damaged cards but it is prudent to format them again in the M8.

gfspencer Posted September 10, 2011 Share #9 Posted September 10, 2011 Congratulations on the M8! The card should work fine for the M8, though it's faster than the camera needs. What is the fastest card that the M8 can use? Thanks.
ho_co Posted September 10, 2011 Share #10 Posted September 10, 2011 I can't answer that directly because I haven't tested it. (I think someone did some tests when the M8 was current and posted them here.) I generally use Class 4 cards because they're quite accessibly priced and I don't think there's much (any?) improvement in the M8's write speed with a faster card. k-hawinkler Posted September 10, 2011 Share #11 Posted September 10, 2011 What is the fastest card that the M8 can use? Thanks. What do you actually mean? As stated, it can use a fast card it seems. However, if the M8 behaves similar to the M9 it might not be able to write the card at that speed, but, as stated before, your card reader might. I would suggest reading http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-sd-card-issues/. As I only have an M9 and not an M8 I would nevertheless be interested to learn whether a Panasonic Gold card works without problems on the M8? So far, no problems with that card on the M9 have been reported in the Leica M9 SD card problem thread http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-sd-card-issues/194483-leica-m9-sd-card-problem-reports.html. Good luck. Best, K-H.
k-hawinkler Posted September 10, 2011 Share #12 Posted September 10, 2011 Yes I'm sure those extra 10-20 seconds will be crucial! Well, on my cards when they are full of images the difference in reading speeds can be as fast as 10 minutes or as slow as 30 minutes. You be the judge whether that matters to you or not. Of course, correct functioning of the card is paramount. Best, K-H.
