marknorton Posted August 31, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I've just realised that the latest lens I've bought has the Leica logo on the back as well as the front lens cap. It's in raised plastic on the back surface. Nothing to do with IQ of course but a welcome change to the rather low-rent previous versions - helps justify the high cost. Nikon, of course, have done this since the year dot. Anyone know if the Leica M body caps have been similarly enhanced?
Advertisement Posted August 31, 2011 Posted August 31, 2011 Hi marknorton, Take a look here Leica logo on Rear Lens Caps. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ayewing Posted August 31, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 31, 2011 Well I bought my M9 in April this year and there is no logo on the body cap, only a bright orange sticker. The Summilux 50mm bought at about the same time does not have a logo on the rear cap so this must be a very recent innovation.
Holybasil Posted August 31, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 31, 2011 Zeiss does it to their lenses as well.
jaapv Posted August 31, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 31, 2011 That is very anoying. The Super Elmar I bought a week ago has the outdated plain rear cap. I will have to return the lens and demand a replacement. I find it rather shabby of Leica to palm off an old model as a new lens.
hoppyman Posted August 31, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 31, 2011 I'm a working pro that just purchsed an M9 and five new lenses to shoot a wedding. My guests noticed right away that my lens caps were low rent and refused to pay for the assignment. This never happened with my much more stylish Nikon caps I'm outraged that Leica Camera has deliberately sabotaged my image and directly cost my business $20,000 this month alone in cancelled work due to the appalling nature of these crappy caps. They are made of plastic! Are they even made in Germany?? There are grounds for a class action and I shall be posting on every on-line forum about this until a receive a personal apology from Stefan Daniel. farnz Posted September 1, 2011 Share #7 Posted September 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recently bought an M9-P and I've just discovered that Leica Camera has left the red dot off the front! How could they forget something as simple as sticking a red dot on a £5,500 camera?! What a shambolic quality control system they must have. I shall take it back to my dealer and demand a brand new M9-P replacement immediately because I can't use the camera until it's repaired!!! Add this to your class action please, Geoff! IkarusJohn Posted September 1, 2011 Share #8 Posted September 1, 2011 It's an outrage! I've lost faith in my M9. I'm quite sure it won't work as well, knowing that my Summiluxes and my Summicrons are second class! I'll cancel my Noctilux order right away. menos I M6 Posted September 1, 2011 Share #9 Posted September 1, 2011 I tried a friends new cap'ed 50 Summilux ASPH on my M8.2. It is focussing at infinity correctly. Now I tried all my lenses with the old cap again on both the M8.2 and the M9 and they are all back focussing on the M8.2 and M9! I have tried also two older Leica lenses with black Bakelite rear cap, which are front focussing on the same camera in close focus! Now, I received also a 79 year old Hektor, which came in LTM mount and one of those original brass rear caps with enamel paint finish! This lens is focussing spot on on both cameras, front, medium and infinity. Even the focus patch lines up perfectly! All my Canon LTM lenses, but one came with generic rear caps and I had to collimate them all, as they didn't focus reliably. The Canon 85/1.8, which came with original, mint Canon rear cap back focussed severely!!! All, and I mean ALL Nikon lenses, that I bought, new or second hand, which came with original Nikon rear cap with Nikon logo, focus perfectly fine on my Nikon SLRs - ALL! My iPhone 3GS misses focus all the time - it's very slow focussing - might have to do with the Apple logo having cleaning marks - I cannot see any fungus or dust with the flashlight test. Do I need to ship all lenses and cameras, to a repair specialist or is it enough, just to ship the caps?
wilfredo Posted September 1, 2011 Share #10 Posted September 1, 2011 Mark, I hope you have a sense of humor. Glad to know Leica is catching up with the times when it comes to rear lens caps. Now if they could only come up with a front cap for the lens hood of the 35mm Summicron M ASPH, that won't fall off and get lost, I would be very happy indeed! The lens cap on the hood of my D2 is perfect, probably made by Panasonic.
marknorton Posted September 1, 2011 Author Share #11 Posted September 1, 2011 Enough of this sarcasm! I know I had the temerity to complain about the two blobs of paint and I know that introducing a new rear lens cap is not going to change the world but I think it's a nice touch for them to have changed the design of the lens cap after all these years. I'm just glad Bill is sunning himself in Lanzarote and I might escape one of his withering posts... Wilfredo, I do agree about the slip-on hood covers but I fear they are here to stay. menos I M6 Posted September 1, 2011 Share #12 Posted September 1, 2011 Mark, everything is nice and nothing is meant to harm you, although it could, as after your bad happening with your Leica lens' paint filling done by a 2year old, I am finding myself checking all paint fillings of all Leitz items, that quiver around my place ;-) Sometimes, it can be very healthy, to just do some nonsense talk - relaxes the brain. marknorton Posted September 1, 2011 Author Share #13 Posted September 1, 2011 Just be grateful that since the lens has gone back to Solms for repair, I can't clog your boradband connection with a picture of it!

wattsy Posted September 1, 2011 Share #16 Posted September 1, 2011 Jokes aside, the new rear caps - with the logo and small lip around the edge - are certainly more elegant and seem to make a design statement that harks back to an earlier era in Leica/Leitz's history. tdtaylor Posted September 1, 2011 Share #19 Posted September 1, 2011 All pretty funny, but as stated the new lens caps are a nice improvement. Didn't even realize it was the new design until this thread. (My camera is off to NJ, so I have to amuse myself somehow). And as mentioned, if such improvement could only come to the slip on caps. I have three lenses with them, and I have replaced them all at one time, as well as backtracked and found them on the ground. Last time I bought two for my WATE, understanding wit would only be a matter of time before one was lost- maybe a velcro flap will help
salim Posted September 1, 2011 Share #20 Posted September 1, 2011 Now that we are in the topic. How do one go about ordering Leica accessories, such as the leica original lens cap?. Is there 3rd party site, or it has to come from leica?
