I bought this lens about 10 or so years ago for my M7. The serial number is 3929xxx.

I have been reading in the Forum that there is a variety of models of this lens, at various qualily levels, produced over the years. I am very happy with the performance of this lens, and it is serving me well on my new M9.

Can someone tell me where this lens falls in the quality/performance spectrum on the evidently various models of the Summilux-M f1.4 ASPH? And why are there these differing models, without labelled differentiation?

Your lens is from 2005 or 2006. The black version (# 11891) has been launched in 2004 and the silver one (# 11892) in 2006. The special edition LHSA came out in 2005 with black paint (# 11627) and silver (# 11628) coatings. All are the same optically AFAIK. I have no experience with the LHSA though.

Not as sharp. Still a nice lens though. Commonly referred to as the pre-ASPH.

There's several discussions on these two lenses. These might get you started:

Thanks all for your comments. I shall keep the lens, with which I'm extremely happy. Importantly to me, it's razor sharp, and I rarely use the 1.4 setting anyway, and then for shootings where large enlargements are not required. I have not noticed a decline in sharpness, btw, at 1.4 to 2.0 settings.

Thanks again.

And then I notice that all 50 mm lenses are backordered by Leica. what's going on?

The China demand is interesting. Explains part of the problem.

I just received an email from a dealer I use in Germany (a major Leica distributor), where I have been awaiting a 35 lux FE for 14 months, and he noted while Solms production was shut down for a month, the Portugal factory, which supplies parts, was shut down for three months. I had not heard anything along these lines, so I was rather surprised when I heard it. In the past, the store has always appeared to be rather in touch with events, and has always been pretty much on the mark finding me difficult to acquire lenses.

Any truth to the statement. I find it hard to believe

[it may be that I'm just jealous for getting that much time off ;)]
