R Solution Forgotten?

I haven't seen any further discussion on an R solution? Is this dead in the water? No Leica DSLR?

If it were to happen, would it have a CCD or CMOS sensor? I'm partial to CCD for people shots.

While I'm at it, will the M10 retain a CCD sensor?

No, the R solution is not forgotten, in fact in this months PROFIFOTO magazine there is an interview with Andreas Kaufmann and Alfred Schopf in which the R solution is subject of discussion.

Chairman of LEICA CAMERA AG Alfred Schopf:

"... we have a whole lot of R-clients who currently feel left alone and whom we would like to help further. The M-bayonet does not offer a solution in this. What we need is a system camera, to which we can connect R lenses..

I think it very likely that rhe M10 will not be CCD. If it should be it will be a very advanced CCD like Kodak's newest offerings. I would be very surprised if the Maestro technology would not filter through to the M10.

As t othe R solution, maybe Photokina, maybe 2013. Some rebranded product, I shouldn't wonder.

Judging from this, it seems very likely that we can expect some exciting M and R developments in the not so distant future. I'm dreading to think what this new technology will cost once the Leica label is stamped on it. Did I understand correctly that the M10 could be a 29 megapixel camera using Kodak's KAI-29050 29MP sensor? That is starting to sound mega pricey. Can somebody please tell me that's not the case?

No chance for new R lenses, but every chance of some new lenses, made by a partner, but Leica branded, to fit with the new camera.

Existing R lenses will probably fit to this camera via an adaptor. R lenses have stabilised in price recently - indeed, I saw a Mint 80 Summilux for £1,500 last week.

Would the adapter provide Focus Confirm and the ability for the aperture to stay wide open while stopping down?

Will the new lenses feature AF?

Will the R solution come with a CCD or CMOS sensor?

Will it have a "plastic" painted appearance or look and feel like a solid well crafted Leica?

The only people who know the answer to those, and other, questions are those people involved with the project, and they aren't saying.

1. Leica will never produce another "R" lens, just as Canon will never again produce another "FD" breech-mount lens, and Pentax will never again produce a screw-mount lens. The world has moved on (at least from the manufacturers' perspective).

2. Leica will never again produce a traditional, ground-glass-and-prism-and-mirror-and-levers-and-cams SLR (unless one counts the S2, which does away with the levers and cams). Nor a camera that can honestly bear the "R" label (dedicated R-mount built-in).

3. It is likely there will be a new system based on a mirrorless, electronic-viewing, short-focus autofocus body - with a new line of AF lenses (neither R nor M mount). Think something akin to (but not a rebadged) Sony NEX, or a micro-4/3rds with a bigger sensor. Or a Leica X1 with an interchangeable mount added.

Which in addition to the main set of lenses (call them "X"-mount) will be able to accept M or R lenses via adapters of the right depth.

That may not be an "R solution" to some - but it will be to Leica, and as far as they're going to bend in that direction.

I expect it will offer an optional eye-level EVF for those who don't like arm's-length photography, and accesory optical vewfinders for those who want to use it as a "mini-M" or M9 backup.

As to Wilfredo's other questions:

The AF will likely be off the sensor image (contrast-detect), which is not ideal for focus confirm. It would be possible but slow. More likely would be a magnification effect for fine-focusing as in all EVF cameras from the Digilux 2 to the Canon 5D2 in live-view mode (and countless cameras in between).

It is likely possible to engineer an R adapter that can actuate the lens aperture levers in response to an electronic signal from the camera. Whether Leica will actually make anything other than a basic tube is unknown. Exposures will be problematic metering at full aperture and exposing stopped-down unless there is a reverse link to tell the camera how much the lens will stop down (or the camera pauses to remeter once stop-down occurs) - I think it becomes an engineering can of worms that Leica simply won't open. Possible does not = probable.

The new "X-mount" (note - not the official system name!!) lenses will be AF.

CMOS sensor.

Build quality will be somewhere between an X1 and a Leicaflex/R9 - but that is a big playing field. Probably closer to the first than the second - does the X1 have a "plastic" painted appearance? ;)

Wifredo -

Many of us R and DMR fans are still about and hoping for a solution we find acceptable, and based on the long thread reacting to Leica's statements about a larger than 4/3 sensor camera (http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-forum/187946-compact-interchangeable-lens-camera-coming-09-a.html), about a camera that will probably be much as Andy describes, we may see a prototype at the show in October.

Stuart, I'm curious. Is that what used to be the PMA (what are they calling it now)?

photokina is Sept 18-23, 2012.

Stuart,

when there is a Leica R to M adaptor, life is easy from November onwards:

Ricoh GXR with the APS-C M module. I'm on the fence to buy (now) cheap R lenses when the first tests look good. OK, it's not full frame but there is no guarantee for a FF Leica solution.......
