Hi L fellows...

I have a leica M8 for about 2 years.. Today, the actuations is about 92xx.. The bad news is.. This M8 is the first batch edition.. No. 31014xx.. Never had a problem.. From the previous owner the actuation is about a thousand.. I upgraded to latest firmware 2.014..

Scared about short-life shutter clicks...

Never had any problem... Did I need to upgrade the shutter or did anybody know how to care this lotso defect baby???

Thanks before!

Brian

You can do two things - keep on taking photographs like you ever did (and why shouldn't you?), and like the vast majority of M8 owners do. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Or send it in for a CLA or upgrade and extended guaranty. Your choice. There is no indication that cameras of this first series are less reliable than newer ones, but there were some minor electronic changes in 2007 and 2008 that Leica will implement automatically when an older camera gets sent in.

The expected life of this shutter is probably over 150.000 actuations, so there is no reason to fiddle with it now

Thanks Jaap...

Mmm quite considering about upgrade the shutter, (i dund need da lcd n frame upgrade) but the shutter itself cost about a thousand dollar even more.. That's the big question mark for myself.. Is it worth it? More wiseful if i sell the M8 and add a thousand dollar for buy M9... But, what da heck right? :)

As long as i do the right thing.. It would be ok right? Im kinda scared.. Btw, I've got a new third party battery from my friend, he sell many third party product on Indonesia.. I wonder can I use that battery to my M8.. It's says 1900 mAh.. About right amount of power right?...

Thanks..

You can probably use it - but you may run into trouble with your battery level indicator.

If you want the quieter, slower shutter you can consider the upgrade. If you think it will be more reliable, there is no reason to think so. In fact, looking back in time on the forum, the majority of broken shutters reported were the slower ones.

Thanks for your recomendation Jaap...

Yeah.. at functional perspective, lost 1/8000th sec is no big deal.. but still.. US$1000 for your M8? mmm...

Noise is the numero uno problem here, beside more vibration with original shutter.. I don't know, maybe because I use M3 a lot... my opinion, the vibration and noise that generated from M8 is louder than today's entry level DSLR..

Okay.. maybe I'll just use normally for now.. we'll see...

Thanks by the way..

Cheers

Normally yes. I mostly use those kind of cheap batteries personally. Only problem with M8 & M8.2 (M9 also i guess), you must drain them until the camera stops before recharging, otherwise the battery meter gives false results.

I think my M8 is a bargain IMHO, I like having the /8k speed option - it's at Solms now for CLA, and I won't be seeking the upgrade, I don't feel I need it. Set shutter to 'silent' mode - some say a half case acts like a 'blimp' if you are really worried, and are cheap from China, it doesn't have to be a Luigi. I have a 'Standard', M2 and MP too, and yes they are a bit quieter, but not by much really.

Experience is something you get just after you need it...

Interesting. I had never tried to tally up (or even casually observe) results. One of the most important reasons to use Leica lenses is their wide-open performance, and for that the 8k speed is sometimes useful. I often see 6k displayed.

When it comes to loudness of the shutter, it will be of varying significance to each photographer. Some may never need to worry about the sound. Before photographing someone, they may first ask for permission to get a photo. The added bonus of consent could be the ability to take a tight, frame-filling portrait if desired.

The mere presence of a camera may actually be an important factor and it has its effect way before the shutter is triggered.

With respect that is meaningless unless you know the proportion of each type in circulation. I would suspect that with the upgrade M8s and all the M8.2s and special editions there are more slower out there to break :D
