Beyder28 Posted August 15, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 15, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anyone know if you can mount this lens (Leitz Leica Elmar M 90mm f/4 Collapsible Silver 9cm/F4) on an M9? I have read on Ken Rockwell's site that it can't be mounted on the M9 (if you don't want to ruin sensor). Is this correct? Rockwell reviews the screw mount version but does this also apply to the later M mount version?
Advertisement Posted August 15, 2011 Posted August 15, 2011 Hi Beyder28, Take a look here Collapsible M mount 90mm.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.noctilux Posted August 15, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 15, 2011 It can be used on M9. To be fool proof, just put around the barrel a rubber band or something not to collapse the lens. Arnaud
jc_braconi Posted August 15, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 15, 2011 It can be used on M9.To be fool proof, just put around the barrel a rubber band or something not to collapse the lens. Arnaud 2 wrap of adhesive tape works also well just check that the lens tube comes right to the end of the M bayonet, no more than this.
Pecole Posted August 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2011 Does anyone know if you can mount this lens (Leitz Leica Elmar M 90mm f/4 Collapsible Silver 9cm/F4) on an M9? You say Rockwell reviews the "screw mount version", but there is no screw mount version of the "collapsible" 9cm Elmar (except one experimental prototype in the Leica Museum). wizard Posted August 18, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 18, 2011 check out Rockwell's site, you'll see. He even has pics of it. I believe Pecole is entirely correct. Ken Rockwell mentions the collapsible M-mount and the rigid screw mount. Where did you see a collapsible screw mount on his site? Andy
Beyder28 Posted August 18, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted August 18, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) My mistake. It is not in screw mount and only M mount. Either way, Rockwell says Leica's advice is to not use this on an M9. Does anyone have any experience with this lens and or has used it on the M9? luigi bertolotti Posted August 19, 2011 Share #8 Posted August 19, 2011 On my M8, the inner tube slightly "touches" the interior of the camera if one retractes the lens... no problem, of course, if one keeps the lens extended.
Beyder28 Posted August 20, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted August 20, 2011 Well in that case if you can't collapse it then it kind of defeats the purpose of having it. The newer (next generation after collapsibles) ones are better quality and not as expensive from what I understand.
scsambrook Posted August 20, 2011 Share #10 Posted August 20, 2011 Beyder28, I believe the collapsible 90 has the same optics as the contemporary rigid version. The later 3-element version sells for much higher prices than the earlier ones.
a.noctilux Posted August 20, 2011 Share #11 Posted August 20, 2011 Modern replacement: The Macro-Elmar-M 90mm collaps and nothing protrude inside the body. This lens is amazing. Good sharpness, nice boke, very light and with the Macro-Adapter-M take 1:3 almost macro Arnaud
Beyder28 Posted August 20, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted August 20, 2011 I like that lens but it's 5 times more than the old collapsible 90mm.

pico Posted August 26, 2011 Share #14 Posted August 26, 2011 From the M9 manual Leica M lenses Essentially, most Leica M lenses can be used with the LEICA M9. Details on the small number of exceptions and restrictions can be found in the following notes.[...] Important: • Cannot be used: – Hologon 15mm f/8 – Summicron 50mm f/2 with close up setting, – Elmar 90mm f/4 with retractable tube (manufactured from 1954–1968) [....] • Can be used, but risks damaging the camera or lens Lenses with retractable tube can only be used with the tube extended, i.e. their tube must never be retracted into the LEICA M9. This is not the case for the current Macro-Elmar-M 90mm f/4, whose tube does not protrude into the camera body even when retracted. It can therefore be used without any restrictions
