The Super Angulon–M 21/3.4...

I am trying to sell my Super Angulon–M 21/3.4 here in Los Angeles and I have had many replies – for example one potential buyer who wanted to use it on his M9...well, that didn't work so well...he got nothing but brutally overexposed pictures, but he was able to mount it on the camera without problem...

But one reply I got puzzled me, it was from someone who wondered if I might consider a trade with an Elmarit–M 21/2.8 and I'm wondering – why would anyone want to make such a trade...?

...you wonder why I haven't sold, yes, well, if I wanted to accept $900 I could have sold long ago, but I am not willing to do that...it's a great lens and in very good shape and I have been extremely protective of the glass, so I'm not willing to let it go at that price. Feel free to advise me what you think it should be valued, sight unseen of course...

Thanks in advance for illumination on the "21 for 21" offer....

On the trade question - If I were a film user with an unmetered body (M3 through M4-P), I'd likely prefer the f/3.4 Super-Angulon because it is smaller and lighter, or because it is distortion-free (rectilinear distortion - it will still "stretch" things in the corners, but the later Elmarits have some "mustache" distortion - barrel distortion that is unevenly corrected in the corners, making for wavy parallels in architectural shots.) Additionally, if I had a chrome body and wanted chrome lenses, the pre-ASPH 21 Elmarit was never made in chrome, and the ASPH chrome version is VERY heavy.

I actually did swap from an Elmarit to the SA for a year or so when I had unmetered M4-2/P cameras. Went back to the Elmarit once I got a metered M6.

Incidentally, 21 Elmarits (even the pre-ASPH) are running $1800 these days, so a swap at that value level would be twice "$900." ASPH 21's are over $3,000.

Actually, I've found that simply dialing in -1.5 stops of exposure compensation got me good exposures with the 21 SA on my M9 - the real problem is that the pure wide-angle design of the SA produces massive red-edge. However, we have one in the shop, so I will try it again today with the new firmware and manual 21 f/2.8 corrections and see if those do better with that lens than the original M9 settings.

I join Andy's opinion about the proposed swap...a film user can prefer the SA 3,4 over the Elmarit, while for a M8/9 user it can be the opposite ; the SA, if in good conditions is still an excellent lens... I did some practical face-to-face comparisions when bought my Elmarit asph, and (with M8 - so with a crop), there is not so much difference at medium apertures.

Well, I use the SA on my M8 (actually I have 2 - an original 'standard' M version and an 'R' (3.4) with a 12228 adapter - its a very long story) and always shoot in with manual exposure. I 'guesstimate' the exposure and am surprised at the relative accuracy of my first shot often needing little tweaking to optimise the exposure. Using Cornerfix results in excellent files and its one of only two lenses that I have sold, regretted and re-bought. Its a classy little lens. Personally speaking, my advice would be to keep it if you want a 21mm, unless you really want to trade 'up' to the Elmarit in order to profit on the deal when you subsequently sell it. FWIW 3.4 SA's seem to sell quite quickly by dealers in the UK with £850~£1000 being the dealer price.

Thanks all for very interesting and informative replies – Adan, your point would be the key point for me, about geometric distortion, I personally would not buy a lens knowing it had that type of problem...

I also didn't know the market value was that "different" between SA21 and the Elmarit...if I had, I might have accepted.. !

I would like to get about (US)$1200 for the lens, but have put price slightly higher in my ads (potential buyers will always want to reduce price no matter what the ask is...)

Thanks for replies that did point straight to core of the "issue" – they clarified for me...

I always appreciated the evenness of illumination and the freedom from barrel or pincushion issues and since I only used it on an M4, handheld metering was routine for me...(if I measured at all, I only shot Kodachrome 25 and eventually you know your exposures most of the time..!)

Luigi, did you try to code it then?

No... the SA on M8 has also the problem of uncorrect metering... so I found a fine Elmarit asph and made it coded... and now is the 21 I use regularly : of course didn't throw away the SA .... Super Angulons are too nice items (the old SA f4 is even nicer... though is by far the worst in practical usage)
