edmond_terakopian Posted August 11, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Greetings All, Am toying with the idea of getting a 28mm Summicron but really dislike the huge standard lens hood. Does anyone have pictures of the Leica scalloped metal hood fitted to a 28mm Summicron they could share? Ideally mounted on a body. Much Appreciated, Edmond

nelly Posted August 12, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 12, 2011 I read some threads regarding lens hoods for the 28 summicron and took a recommendation to buy the previous 35 summilux hood which is a little more compact and has less blockage It has worked well for me. leicashot Posted August 12, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 12, 2011 Took a fresh pic of mine today. Anyone can tell me how to post a picture on these threads? M9-P chrome with Summicron 28mm f/2 ASPH | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Looks great and is a smaller footprint than the plastic. i also heard Leica was out of stock of this hood so maybe the 500 limited production rumor has some truth to it. I agree, but dang... $4000 for a lens Also bought for the 28 Summicron the previous 35mm Summilux hood (which I picked up on eBay boxed unused for $100) but I prefer using the metal hood. leicashot Posted August 12, 2011 Share #12 Posted August 12, 2011 Summicron 28/2 & Leica hood # 12589. The only problem with this hood is that it's thin and weak. I've seen many broken samples of these from bumps and drops. Granted, its not 'fragile' but it's not what i'd describe as robust and no where near as strong as the new #12466 or the 'refrigerator'. But it is a nice size and not $400, so.....if you're careful with it you're all good.
lct Posted August 12, 2011 Share #13 Posted August 12, 2011 Does not look thinner or weaker than the original hood at first glance but i've never dropped my Summicron 28 with it to be honest. All i can say, i've put it once on the lens and never removed it since then.

Granted, its not 'fragile' but it's not what i'd describe as robust and no where near as strong as the new #12466 or the 'refrigerator'. First time I've heard this - the #12589 hood is plenty strong enough. Like LCT, I've put this hood on my 28 Summicron and not given it any further thought. If you like the metal #12466 then by all means go with that. Personally, if the Summicron came with the #12466 I would ditch it in favour of the #12589 (as I did when I replaced the silly round metal hood that came with my black paint Summicron with the regular rectangular plastic hood). Don't get me wrong Ian the #12589 is a great hood I used for years and never had an issue, but I have seen 3 cracked ones (on sides and front as well as the two clips falling off) and its certainly thinner than the original Cron's hood. At the price of the #12466 I don't actually recommend it. i only bought it because I love the way it looks and appreciate it being metal. Plastic also generally takes more impact and passes less stress to the lens too, especially if it cracks so in some ways the #12589 is the best protection for the lens against impact. lct Posted August 12, 2011 Share #18 Posted August 12, 2011 The 12466 metal hood is a vented one. I would be surprised if its resistance against impacts is much superior to zero. I've had crashed 12585s already, those hoods are not solid at all. They can protect the front lens though and they are very nice indeed.
lct Posted August 12, 2011 Share #19 Posted August 12, 2011 ...the #12589 is ... certainly thinner than the original Cron's hood.... I don't have those hoods with me here but i don't share this certitude with respect.
edmond_terakopian Posted August 12, 2011 Author Share #20 Posted August 12, 2011 Ok, I know this is a stupid question as no one would use it if it did, but I'm assuming the old 35mm f1.4 ASPH plastic hood doesn't vignette when used on the 28mm Summicorn on an M9. Just felt the need to ask in case that hood was being used on M8 bodies :-)
