bpalme Posted August 11, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like to watch used prices. Although I haven't been watching as close for M8 lately I have noticed there simply aren't many M8s coming up on ebay. There's only one regular M8 on ebay(like new) for $3500 with extras. I think you can still get them for $2500 on CL in average condition but just an observation. non FLE 35 lux ASPH running $5500-$6500 The 28 Cron ASPH I got late spring for $3300 from Ken Hanson seems to be creeping up. $3300 -$3800 for similar serial numbers. I paid more than normal for mine because of a reputable dealer.. most were going for $2700-$3200 when I bought mine.

SiMPLiFY Posted August 11, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 11, 2011 I agree. I've been priced out of ever owning a 35mm for my M2. I guess I'll just use my Nikon FM2 when I need to go wider.

The old 35 Summaron isn't the fastest (f/3.5) but you can still find nice examples under $500.
SiMPLiFY Posted August 11, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 11, 2011 I need at least F/2.8.
bpalme Posted August 11, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted August 11, 2011 I'm thinking people have been slowly unloading their 28mm Summicron ASPH since the intro of the M9. Focal length of choice for M8 so not as popular on M9...It was about the only one aside from Summarits that sells for less than new. So I think supply is catching up with that one ...similar to all the others it may be selling for more than new by next year.
Michael Geschlecht Posted August 11, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello Kathleen, Welcome to the Forum. Maybe not. Sometimes the World plays catch up. The price of Leica gear new & used is going up because the economy Worldwide is improving. Production shortages which are blamed for the increasing prices for used equipment are themselves caused by an increase in demand caused by this expanding improving World economy. As this occurs the portion of the World you are in, wherever that might be, may well also experience an improvement in its economic situation & you might find yourself w/ a 35 for your M2 sooner than you might think. Best Regards, Michael BTW: An FM2 is a perfectly nice camera. Nothing to apologize for there.

leicashot Posted August 11, 2011 Share #9 Posted August 11, 2011 Most professional photographers have never been able to afford/justify Leica, and the current state just further emphasizes that fact. The Leica is a rich amateur camera with pro specs and benefits that are out of reach for pros. Quite ironic.

Michael Geschlecht Posted August 11, 2011 Share #11 Posted August 11, 2011 Hello Everybody, 35mm photography has always been a field where the parameters for equipment made for professionals has been determined by the proclivities of the amatuer market. Nothing new here tooday. If you think the World Economy is not improving look @ China, The Middle East Oil States & so forth. Don't forget Leica's market is the entire World. Not only its Historic Provinces. Best Regards, Michael

If you look at the profiles of many of those who post on this forum (and we're a minority of Leica owners), you'll find a lot of people who make their livings from photography (my definition of a professional) and who have chosen to use Leica because it does a better job for them. If you'd said "since the advent of the SLR most professional photographers specialising in news, sport and wildlife have turned away from RF cameras" I'd completely agree with you. But that would be another story of other horses for other courses.
mmradman Posted August 11, 2011 Share #16 Posted August 11, 2011 BTW: An FM2 is a perfectly nice camera. Nothing to apologize for there. And Nikkor 35mm Ai or Ai-S f1.4 is very decent lens, crazy sharp between f2.8 and f5.6.

The main reason:p makers like professionals is because if they are seen to be using the product, it will sell to the amateur
menos I M6 Posted August 11, 2011 Share #18 Posted August 11, 2011 I agree. I've been priced out of ever owning a 35mm for my M2. I guess I'll just use my Nikon FM2 when I need to go wider. Kathleen, have a good browse around the forums regarding rangefinder lenses, usable for Leica M. It must not be a 35mm, made by Leica. There are other wonderful wide angle lenses around. One, often mentioned is the 35 f2.5 Color Skopar at a bargain price, new or used, the Summaron is a beautiful classic Leica lens, as well made, as Leica rarely makes new lenses anymore (obviously too slow for your needs, but it is indeed a low contrast lens, that often can pull out detail in the shadows, a modern 2.8 lens simply blocks. The 35 1.2 Voigtlander lens is one of the best superfast 35mm lenses available for Leica M (although, bigger and heavier, than a typical Leica RF lens). Canon and Nikon made 35mm lenses in Leica LTM mount, which despite their age are still fantastic lenses Today for just a few hundred USD. Leica makes a 35mm Summarit f2.5, which is very nice according to users. It must not be a 7.000 USD second hand 35 Summilux ASPH FLE from eBay
MarkP Posted August 11, 2011 Share #19 Posted August 11, 2011 And Nikkor 35mm Ai or Ai-S f1.4 is very decent lens, crazy sharp between f2.8 and f5.6. My experience is different. I used a 1.4/35 AIs Nikkor as my main lens on my F3/T for 20 years. I thought it was a great lens until I bought an M9 with the 1.4/35 ASPH (latest version). I saw the light! The Nikkor 35 doesn't compare. Mark
