philipus Posted August 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all Here's a, perhaps, odd question. What is the focal length equivalent of the M3 viewfinder? Since the 50mm frame lines are smaller, I would guess the VF is a bit wider but how much? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Cheers Philip
Advertisement Posted August 7, 2011 Posted August 7, 2011 Hi philipus, Take a look here M3 VF's focal length equivalent?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
UliWer Posted August 7, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 7, 2011 I don't know how to define the focal length of the viewfinder. Usually it's magnification is given. The M3 had the largest magnification of 0.9x, the M2 and most following M-types had 0.72x, the digital bodies M8 and M9 have 0.68x. So the 50mm frames in the viewfinder of the M3 are the largest in any M camera. Because of this magnification the frames for 35mm lenses didn't fit in and you needed the lenses with goggles to compensate, so you could use the 50mm frame for 35mm. gvaliquette Posted August 7, 2011 Share #3 Posted August 7, 2011 Since the 35mm frame does not fit in, and there is not that much outside the 50mm frame, I would guess something like 40mm for the viewfinder edges. Thinking of it as I am writing this, the M3 may be the best M camera to use the Summicron/Rokkor 40mm/f2.0 with, after the CL! I'll have to check it out... gyoung Posted August 8, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 8, 2011 Having both M3 and M6ttl, I would suggest that
gyoung Posted August 8, 2011 Share #5 Posted August 8, 2011 ...there is so little around the 50mm frame on the M3 that it is no use for framing. The frames where reduced in size when the 28 was added, so any 0.72 finder with 28 in it has a '35mm' frame which is actually more accurate for 40mm Sorry about the split post, I hit the wrong button on my phone! earleygallery Posted August 9, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 9, 2011 The answer is it's a 50mm frame. I know there's a little space around the frames but if it were enough for a 35mm view then Leica would have said as much.
thomasw_ Posted August 11, 2011 Share #7 Posted August 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you have one of those Pentax 43/1,9 on a M3, using the entire VF frame would be just right
