Brandon Skinner Posted July 24, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 24, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi guys, After my recent trip to Hong Kong, I think it's time to put down my 50 pound Canon 1Ds-MarkIII and start enjoying travel photography again and possibly joining the Leica world with an M8 or M8.2. I have a question for everybody... is 16747 Actuations a little too many when considering the purchase of a used digi-M? The price seems fair right now but it definitely seems to be a more loved camera than other M8's on eBay. Would love to hear your thoughts on this... jaapv Posted July 24, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 24, 2011 There has been a camera reported with over 300.000. It is a Copal shutter which is barely run in at 15.000 actuations.
johnloumiles Posted July 24, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 24, 2011 I bought one with over 20,000 and have put on around 3,000 since owning it. It has not skipped a beat so far...knock on wood.

Looking at the same camera, but not sure if I will be bidding. Comes with some goodies, hopefully it'll stay under 3k. GL

Jeff S Posted July 24, 2011 Share #6 Posted July 24, 2011 Only one consideration, and not that all meaningful. A few thousand actuations, but stored on a bouncing boat or motorcycle, is different than many more actuations under less stressful use. I buy only from reputable dealers to get a warranty, or at least for intervention in the event any problems turn up. Otherwise you take your chances regardless of actuations or anything else. wda Posted July 24, 2011 Share #8 Posted July 24, 2011 Brandon, welcome to the forum! I echo the recommendation to buy from a trusted official Leica dealer for the reasons stated. Also, build a good relationship and you reap the benefits during your Leica ownership. It should not be too difficult to find a dealer with second-hand M8s, so that you can try before you buy! Wishing you success in your venture.

gfspencer Posted July 24, 2011 Share #10 Posted July 24, 2011 Buy from a trusted official Leica dealer for the reasons stated.. +2 I'm not one to talk because I buy very little from ebay but I just wouldn't spend that much money on a camera in a person to person transaction. I would buy from a trusted retailer . . . . and try to get a warranty.

lct Posted July 24, 2011 Share #12 Posted July 24, 2011 5000 actuations or less are easy to find out on e**y or elsewhere. Unless the price you've got is very attractive, i would take my time if i were you.

For those interested, some of them do provide a 6 months to one year warranty actually.

ramosa Posted July 24, 2011 Share #16 Posted July 24, 2011 No, 16,000 isn't too many. I have had my M8 for 3.5 years and think I have more than 10000, but less than 16000.

I have no problem with that. My caution was buying from an individual on e**y . . . as opposed to a store. If I buy from an individual and 25 actuations later the camera dies then I am out of luck.
