gtto Posted July 20, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 20, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do most of you find less contrast when using UV/IR filters? At the moment ,I am not using any so I have nothing to compare it to. I have always used a UV filter as protection, on all my othecanon lenses and never thought about a contrast difference but I have read much about how another surface can cause more flare and less contrast. Opinions? Thanks gary
Advertisement Posted July 20, 2011 Posted July 20, 2011 Hi gtto, Take a look here Filters and Contrast. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
lct Posted July 20, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 20, 2011 No the only significant differences i perceive are a feeling of enhanced sharpness and more or less green oversaturation in grass and foliage with UV/IR filters. Now i did not use UV filters regularly before so take what i say with a pinch of salt.
Xmas Posted July 20, 2011 Share #3 Posted July 20, 2011 Hi If the sun is low (soon be your fall) and you are shooting into shadow, chimp regular for iris images etc. remove filter upon artifice... Use deeper 3rd party hood if the leica one telescopes... Noel
Holybasil Posted July 20, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 20, 2011 I can't say i've shot enough without a filter to say with any certainty. Regardless it wouldn't matter to me since I always edit in RAW.
jaapv Posted July 20, 2011 Share #5 Posted July 20, 2011 I think I know a bit about postprocessing - but I know of no way to compensate completely for contrast loss due to veiling flare. Regardless it wouldn't matter to me since I always edit in RAW.
Xmas Posted July 20, 2011 Share #6 Posted July 20, 2011 Hi Yes but the IR filters and sensor can do more than veiling flare with a low sun shooting into deep shade even in medium UK latitudes, even with a hooded cron... Easy to see when you chimp, veiling flare you might miss... Removing the filter may not help 100% Noel

Of course, like all filters, UV/IRs can cause flare and ghost images but we all know this don't we.
