Strange tripod behaviour

I'm new to the M9, I bought a new tripod since my old one broke. It is a Manfrotto 055XPROB with a Manfrotto 084RC2 head. When I mounted my M9 on it and tried to focus the lines in the rangefinder started to move (not talking about the focus). Could the rangefinder be influenced in some kind of magnetic way???? Really not sure what is causing this and would be more than grateful for some ideas!

Regards,

Chris

This is what they are supposed to do, it is called parallax correction. The location of the lens and of the rangefinder mechanism do no coincide so you need to compensate for that depending on where you focus. At (close to) infinity the framelines are centred, at 1m they are displaced "inwards".

Stephen has answered your question, but I might recommend that there are several excellent books for the beginning Leica M user. "Leica M9 The Expanded Guide" by David Taylor is fairly recent and an excellent reference for the new M9 user.

Enjoy your camera!!!

Thank you seafurydriver, I have the book and it touches on parallax, but does not describe what I experienced, the book was a great starting point though. Love the M9 even with it's different ways (compared to my D700) ;o)

"Can you imagine a milking stool tilted and bowled violently along the ground? That was the impression those instant flashes gave. But instead of a milking stool imagine it a great body of machinery on a tripod stand."
