Studio58 Posted July 11, 2011 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Upon receiving my mint M8 I immediately noticed the ugly Leica sticker under a protective plastic coating on the base of the camera. I removed it which I guess makes my camera no longer mint. I have a mint M9 on the way and might think a bit before I take similar action. What is the general practice with Leica M owners ? Advertisement Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 Hi Studio58, Take a look here M8 and M9 base stickers. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
trs Posted July 11, 2011 Share #2 Posted July 11, 2011 My M8 from first batch still has it, but it is no where near mint after close to 5 years use. Nobody sees it under the plate. Besides, it shows what certifications it has. End of the day, it does not really matter to me whether it is there or not. So, I would not worry about much. Studio58 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted July 11, 2011 good answer. Will leave the next one on !
hoppyman Posted July 11, 2011 Share #4 Posted July 11, 2011 If you use it it will be no longer mint in any case of course. Purely for collector purposes you probably needed to just shrinkwrap the whole unopened package and place it in your climate controlled vault for a few hundred years Using it is the best thing to do with it Besides that little sticker is where they seal the Solms magic in... yours may have leaked out now
Studio58 Posted July 11, 2011 Author Share #5 Posted July 11, 2011 best not let any more 'Leica magic' leak out. I love finely made devices and it does seem a shame to degrade the overall ascetic with a crappy sticker, even if it is unseen on the base. Still, when people inquire as to the difference between my two cameras, I will at least be able to reply that the M9 has a sticker on the bottom

lanetomlane Posted July 11, 2011 Share #7 Posted July 11, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have removed from both the M8 and M9. Makes them even lighter to carry. ________________________ Cheers, Tom
SJP Posted July 11, 2011 Share #8 Posted July 11, 2011 Removal of the stickers causes shutter failure (and reduces collectors value)
geotrupede Posted July 11, 2011 Share #9 Posted July 11, 2011 removed all the times (2). just the right thing to do, it is so out of place and ugly... G
epand56 Posted July 11, 2011 Share #10 Posted July 11, 2011 End of the day, it does not really matter to me whether it is there or not. So, I would not worry about much. I think I still even have the transparent film under my M8. I'm not often used to look at the bottom of my camera
luigi bertolotti Posted July 11, 2011 Share #11 Posted July 11, 2011 I removed with care the sticker of my M8, attached it onto an old Leitz polarizer filter and, with the Elmar 5 cm, got interesting effects at different rotation angles...
RobertW Posted July 11, 2011 Share #12 Posted July 11, 2011 Ah, it didn't really grab my attention as much as the "red" sticker on the front of the camera that would look better IMHO in "black" . That said, I'm not going to go to the trouble to make it black so its really not got my attention either. Different strokes for different folks. Yes? pklein Posted July 12, 2011 Share #13 Posted July 12, 2011 The sticker is uneven because of the card with all the certifications under it. I took mine off because I like to set the camera on table tops, fences and parking meters for slow shutter speeds, and with the sticker, it would wobble. Tripods? We don't need no steenking tripods... :-) I'm sure I've reduced the resale value. But since I will probably shoot this camera as long as it lives, so what? Half of what goes on in the Leica world makes no sense to photographers. I shoot mine. --Peter
menos I M6 Posted July 12, 2011 Share #14 Posted July 12, 2011 Got M8.2 used - took sticker off. Got M9 new - waited a few days of use and problems coming up. No problems came up, so took sticker off. A sticker doesn't belong on a camera, otherwise, the device would be called a "stickera".
sfokevin Posted July 12, 2011 Share #15 Posted July 12, 2011 I bought the grip baseplate so I have never used the original baseplate... it is pristine inside the original box
epand56 Posted July 12, 2011 Share #16 Posted July 12, 2011 I think I will take my sticker off the baseplate and sell it in the Buy&Sell section of the forum. I did not know it was such an important and expensive part of the camera...
Guest #12 Posted July 12, 2011 Share #17 Posted July 12, 2011 if the sticker has been on a while, it can leave a mark when removed ... see previous threads.
doubice Posted July 12, 2011 Share #18 Posted July 12, 2011 Removed the sticker a long time ago - looked horrible. If you want to protect the baseplate of any M camera, check the Camera Leather site - they sell what they call 'scratch pads': cameraleather.com Online Ordering Page Scroll all the way to the bottom of the page..... marknorton Posted July 12, 2011 Share #20 Posted July 12, 2011 Yes, remove it. It's ridiculous that Leica do not put this label on the inside, behind the removable base plate. You can buy label removing solvent from the likes of Staples which is much less aggressive than other solvents recommended here - forum members have a particular fondness for acetone.
