johnwolf Posted June 22, 2011 Share #1 Posted June 22, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm considering replacing my Voigtlander 50 1.5 with a different lens. I like its rendering but dislike its ergonomics. The Planar looks most promising and the price is right, but I'd like to ask about its contrast. I owned the Zeiss 35 but found it too contrasty for my taste, especially for BW work. I've got a pretty good feel for the 35. For those of you who have had the Zeiss 35 and 50, how would you compare their character and contrast? Thanks. John
Advertisement Posted June 22, 2011 Posted June 22, 2011 Hi johnwolf, Take a look here Zeiss Planar 50mm Question. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
efix Posted June 22, 2011 Share #2 Posted June 22, 2011 It's been a while since I had the 35 Biogon, but I believe the 50mm goes a little easier on that Zeiss look. I feel it is a little less contrasty than the 35, and has a little less of that magic Zeiss "3D pop", which is both probably due to the fact that the Biogons are highly corrected optical constructions, whereas the Planar is a simple, old-school, proven Double Gauss construction that exhibits slightly more spherical aberration -- to the positive, as I find. Btw.: I replaced my 50 Nokton with a 50 Planar as well, and I'm glad I did so. The Planar's rendering is just so much more interesting and pleasing (colour, contrast, 3D-ness etc.)
